tandfonline.com – Creating space for agency: a conceptual framework to understand and study adolescents’ school engagement from a Funds of Identity perspective

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT A conceptual framework is presented to understand and study the role of students’ agency in their school (dis-)engagement from a Funds of Identity (FoI) perspective. The framework includes the notion of agency combined with Funds of Learner Identity (FoLI): learning preferences that can be considered part of people’s Funds of Identity. The framework holds that students manifest agency to negotiate engaging learning experiences when the school’s affordances and constraints are considerably relatable to their FoLI and allow them to define themselves in desired ways. However, adolescents who feel that possibilities to engage their FoLI are rather limited in school are expected to turn to other contexts to learn, such as home, peer groups and workplaces. An exemplary case… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Using activity theory to understand the impact of social networking sites and apps use by Saudi postgraduate students

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Social networking sites and apps (SNSAs) are being used more frequently across the world and yet the nature of this online environment and associated interactions are not fully understood. With no restrictions for SNSAs use related to specific geographical regions, language, age, gender, educational level, or any other factors, it is important to find a concept to describe and explain the components of this online environment and their relationships. This paper describes the environment of SNSAs use by Saudi postgraduate students from the perspective of second-generation activity theory (AT). The findings supported the theoretical framework of AT as a useful lens in understanding SNSAs use from the perspective of students, particularly in a cultural environment where physical communication… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching: How do Primary Pre-service Teachers in Malawi Understand it?

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract While a consensus within the field exists that pre-service teachers need adequate knowledge and skills to become effective teachers in mathematics, less is known about how they understand the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching in elementary education. This paper explores how Malawian pre-service teachers understand the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching in primary schools. Written answers to a questionnaire survey, and data from six individual interviews collected at the beginning of the teacher-training programme will be presented. The analytical framework is based on the practice-based theory of mathematical knowledge for teaching, with a specific focus on the domains of the common, horizon and specialised content knowledge. The data revealed that, while taking theoretical courses, pre-service teaches develop only intuitive… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – “Minecraft,” Teachers, Parents, and Learning: What They Need to Know and Understand

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article explores six effective principles for teachers to use to understand and apply “Minecraft” in today’s classrooms. Video games have become one of the fastest growing forms of media for youth and adult consumers. “Minecraft,” a multiplayer online game (MOG), is one of the most popular video games to date. By allowing its players to build simulated, virtual worlds, “Minecraft” aims to foster creativity, control, and imagination. Yet while the affordances of playing “Minecraft” spark collaborative learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among youth, one constraint still remains: there appears to be a disconnect between some teachers’ and parents’ understandings about the “Minecraft” world’s mechanisms, uses, and benefits. Due to the success of “Minecraft” in the digital era and in some schools, studying this game is… Continue Reading
