Despite the growing number of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers in the American economy, education statistics suggest that too few Hispanic students are being encouraged and equipped to take advantage of opportunities in technical disciplines. American business and industry and the nation’s Hispanic communities would both benefit from addressing this mismatch. Parts of this article are drawn from his book “This Is Not a Test: A New Narrative on Race, Class, and Education.” In this article he shares his concern for the lack of representation of black and Latino people, especially males, especially as teachers. He notes that while some work as principals and district administrators, others are third-party vendors, education lawyers, and professors in institutions of higher education.
