eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Biotechnology constitutes one of the most challenging, cutting-edge, and rapidly growing fields in science today. Both the practical implications and the hands-on nature of this “modern science” make the topic of biotechnology an attractive addition to the high school science curriculum. The current study is the first of its kind to explore how student characteristics and biotechnology course outcomes relate to one another. Results indicated that students’ general attitudes about science and their overall math skills predicted success across a number of measures, including both self-reported skill ratings as well as the more traditional measures of course grade and exam score. The results also demonstrated the association between skill, as measured through self-reported proficiency ratings, and achievement on an articulation exam. It documented the relation between skills… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document contains the lesson plans for a 12-week course in basic workplace math that was developed for clothing and textile workers through the joint efforts of Northeastern Illinois University’s Chicago Teachers’ Center and the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union. A chart for recording students’ mastery of 25 course objectives is provided. The following topics are covered in the 12 course units: goal setting and math phobia; enumerating and computing; basic operations and workplace computing (addition and subtraction); basic operations and workplace computing (multiplication and division); workplace problems for production; introduction to fractions; basic operations for fractions; word problems using fractions; percentages and fractional equivalents; measurement (imperial versus metric); numerical interpretations on blueprints; and calculators and estimating and general review. The lesson plan included for each… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: After having secondary math education majors write an essay entitled, “What is Mathematics?” for the past 4 years, the first attempt was made to create an instrument based on the results of these essays that would measure math beliefs. Based on previous research which suggests that a math teacher’s beliefs influence the teacher’s methodology, the instrument was administered to elementary education majors to determine their methodological tendencies. The results are compared to similar data obtained from secondary math education majors (n=11) and urban, college-bound high school juniors (n=13). The results suggest that elementary education majors who expect to teach mathematics need a broader vision of what mathematics is. Appendixes contain the survey instrument and results. Based on Webb’s alignment model (1997, 2002), we collected expert judgments on individual math items across a sampling of forms for grades K, 1, and 3-8. We found generally strong alignment across grade levels, focal points, and test forms between the easyCBM[R] mathematics items and the content standards. Example of Rater Materials is appended. (Contains 83 tables.) Link til kilde
