Eric.ed.gov – Preservice Teachers’ Observations of Children’s Learning during Family Math Night

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Family math night can easily be implemented into mathematics methodology courses providing an opportunity for field-based learning. Preservice teachers were asked to develop and implement an inquiry-based activity at a family math night event held at a local school with personnel, elementary children and their parents in attendance. This action research examines what preservice teachers discovered about how children learn mathematics during their interactions with parents and children. Preservice teachers’ individual reflections focusing on children’s learning were qualitatively analyzed and clustered. In addition, data from teacher educator’s observation notes was used to triangulate findings. Four themes were identified in relation to children’s needs for promoting learning in mathematics: (1) activity adjustment (2) engagement through guiding and questioning (3) motivational issues and (4) the use of manipulatives and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Potential of Using iPad as a Supplement to Teach Math to Students with Learning Disabilities

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This qualitative study was conducted to identify the potential of using iPad as a supplement to teach math to students with learning disabilities. Ten teacher candidates from a university in the south provided one-on-one math tutoring services to ten students in a self-contained classroom at a local high poverty elementary school. The students were tutored math for five weeks using ten free math apps in addition to the traditional teaching methods. The apps were selected as they deemed fit with the math content standards, and abilities of the students. Each week, teacher candidates reflected on their tutoring experiences and at the end of five weeks, they completed an open-ended survey regarding their use of iPads as a supplement to teach math to the students. Findings confirmed the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Action Research Project by Teacher Candidates and Their Instructor into Using Math Inquiry: Learning about Relations between Theory and Practice

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper reports on what two teacher candidates and their instructor learned from an action research project into the use of inquiry to teach mathematics. We use a model of the relation between theory and practice in teacher education to interpret what we learned about inquiry. This model describes three modes for teacher candidates to learn about teaching: (1) applying theory to practice; (2) interpreting theory and practice, and (3) building/refining personal, practical and professional theories. We learned to (1) apply the 4D-Cycle Model of inquiry, (2) interpret what it means for inquiry to be flexible, and (3) build a theory of teaching with inquiry based on non-linear and community-based dispositions of teachers toward learning. We conclude by suggesting that this model could constitute a developmental pathway… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Improving Student Evaluation of Teaching: Determining Multiple Perspectives within a Course for Future Math Educators

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Instructors in higher education are very familiar with the Likert scale Students’ Evaluation of Teaching (SET) used to evaluate teaching. Researchers have raised concerns about biases affecting the results of SET surveys, as well as their validity and reliability and use in high-stakes decision making. Here, we demonstrate that Q methodology, identified as an 80-year-old mixed method, is better suited to determine the differing student views about a college math education course. We will discuss how Q used for SET can produce results that are more helpful in assisting faculty in improving their teaching effectiveness and in redesigning courses while also providing more informative SET results for faculty evaluations. Eric.ed.gov – Quality of Life: Domains for Understanding Maths Anxiety in First Year Pre-Service Teachers through Identity Work

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics anxiety in primary pre-service teachers’ affects their future teaching of mathematics and achievement of students. Data collected via Critical Incident Technique were used to investigate this anxiety as perceived and identified by first year pre-service teachers. This paper proposes the application of the Quality of Life conceptual framework of being, belonging and becoming, as a lens for analysis of these reflections to elucidate the concepts of identity and projective identity. This paper makes a contribution to the frameworks through which primary pre-service teachers’ maths anxiety, and its implications for their identity development, might be understood. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Changing the Way to Teach Maths: Preservice Primary Teachers’ Reflections on Using Exploratory Talk in Teaching Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper reports on the reflections of twenty-one primary preservice teachers following a microteaching experience that focused on the use of talk and collaborative group work, as part of a primary mathematics specialist education programme. Based on the didactic strategies of exploratory talk, the experience intended to develop knowledge for teaching mathematics in a contingent way. Preservice teachers’ reflections from an online survey and from written recounts were analysed in relation to noticing students’ learning and behaviour. Whilst the preservice teachers indicated that the microteaching experience impacted on their teaching, some reflections revealed tensions in noticing student learning and in balancing a focus on both collaborative talk and mathematics content. These tensions suggest that resistance to change in the practice of novice teachers may not be due… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Where Is the Math in Science Olympiad? Aligning Mathematics Standards to Science Olympiad Events

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Science Olympiad (SO) is a national non-profit organization which holds science competitions for students in grades 7-12 within 50 states with each event aligned to Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS, 2010). The purpose of this article is not only to align the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) with Science Olympiad events, but also to determine Webb’s Depth of Knowledge Levels (DOK) within the mathematics content. This alignment was achieved by utilizing a content analysis and the Depth of Knowledge alignment processes (Webb, 1999). The findings in this study indicate there are a significant number of SO events that are aligned to the CCSSM with high levels of Depth of Knowledge within the Division B (grades 6-8) and C (grades 9-12) events. Eric.ed.gov – Evaluating Pre-Service Teachers Math Teaching Experience from Different Perspectives

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Are pre-service teachers able to notice their strengths and challenges in teaching? This article reports on a study of pre-service teachers’ teaching performance being simultaneously evaluated by themselves and their professor. Thirty-two pre-service teachers created and planned mathematics lessons approved by their professor to be taught in elementary classrooms. The teaching experience of those teachers was videotaped and evaluated by the professor using the Field Assessment Observation Form in the areas of content knowledge, instruction, assessment, classroom management, and affective skills. Furthermore, the pre-service teachers completed a Self-Reflection answering their professors’ questions regarding their teaching experience. Mixed methods research analyzed the data. The findings of the quantitative data indicate pre-service teachers evaluated themselves higher than what their professor did in assessment and time management. Moreover, the findings… Continue Reading
