This study explored different preparations and the impact on pre-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge. The sample included 96 pre-service teachers enrolled in a math course at one Midwestern university. Results suggest that field experience combined with other aspects of mathematical teacher preparation impact pre-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge for mathematics. (Contains 7 tables.) eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Three key features of a proposed capstone mathematics course for the preparation of teachers at the secondary level are: 1) teacher candidates examine concepts from the curriculum at a deeper level in the context of rich problems; 2) they investigate common themes in the math curriculum, such as shape and change, then collaborate on and present their research; and 3) they create portfolios of extensions and course reflections, products that require them to engage in higher-level, original thinking. The Board believes it is both possible and imperative to develop national strategies that serve the national interest while respecting local responsibility for K-12 teaching and learning. This report draws on research and analysis that shows how stakeholders working in their home communities can converge on what matters most in promoting student achievement. It is further suggested that the science and engineering communities–both individually and through their institutions–represent a special resource for local schools, teachers, and students. Eric.ed.gov – Unexpected Answers: Case Study of a Student Teacher Derailing in a Math Lesson.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: An analysis of a student teacher’s lesson in multiplication for Norwegian second graders explored why the lesson did not succeed. Two interpretive frameworks were used to analyze the lesson: teaching as a complex cognitive activity and teaching as improvisation. The student teacher, Marte, believed in child-centered education and tried to create situations in the classroom where her children experienced success. The analysis of student and teacher exchanges showed that Marte’s class derailed because her pupils offered unexpected types of comments for which she was not prepared; she used the dialogue teaching method which created an unstable and unpredictable classroom environment; and in her responses to the unexpected answers she attended to the wrong things. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper explains the investigative attempts of The New York City Math Exchange Group (MEG) on elementary mathematics teachers’ content knowledge in Adult Basic Education (ABE). The study is comparative in nature and took place in a workshop at the Adults Learning Maths Conference in Boston. The new members of the MEG professional development group were compared to the veteran members. It is observed that among the experienced MEG members, the ability to compute a division problem, create story problems, and reason mathematically and abstractly were higher than in other studies of U.S. teachers and the sample of new MEG members. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With issues of teacher quality in the spotlight, it has been suggested that teachers of mathematics and science too often lack content knowledge in the subjects they teach. Accordingly, research is needed to determine whether teacher ineffectiveness in these subjects is more frequently caused by deficiencies in content knowledge or in pedagogical knowledge, and whether teachers of mathematics and science are more often content-deficient relative to other teachers. Research as such requires that teacher performance be assessed, but this assessment has proven contentious. Use of principals’ evaluations to assess teacher performance, while hardly foolproof, has the advantage of providing school-level managers’ perspective on whether content knowledge or pedagogical knowledge constitutes the more frequent perceived cause of teacher ineffectiveness in secondary schools, especially in mathematics and science.
