eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper explored the authors’ concerns about students enrolled in their introductory accounting course. Anecdotal evidence suggested that students struggle with basic arithmetic concepts that underlie basic business transactions even though their math placement and ACT scores are high. A survey of 125 students in a first accounting course was conducted in the spring of 2010 to assess the basic arithmetical skills. The results indicated that the ACT scores and math placement tests do not reveal weakness in basic arithmetic. We find that faculty and students will experience frustration due to the impaired arithmetic ability. By taking for granted that students possess basic skills in arithmetic faculty will exclude exercises from the curriculum that will build the kind of arithmetic abilities students need to think on their… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Primary students solve “oversized” story problems using drawings, equations, and written responses, helping them understand the links between the language of story problems and the numerical representations of matching equations. The activity also includes oral language and reflective writing, thus bringing together a variety of language experiences into mathematics work. During one 30-minute and one 60-minute session, students will: participate in a shared problem-solving activity; collaborate in small groups to develop a problem-solving strategy; use drawings, words, and equations to model solutions to story problems; effectively and clearly explain their problem-solving strategies to other students; and write about and reflect on their problem-solving strategies. The instructional plan, lists of resources, student assessment/reflection activities, and a list of National Council of Teachers of English/International Reading Association (NCTE/IRA) Standards… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this lesson, students identify the question-answer relationship (QAR) for word problems that relate to a graphic or table. They then use the QAR strategy to determine the mathematical and cognitive actions required to answer the word problem. This activity is particularly appropriate for fourth- and fifth-grade students. During two 40-minute sessions, students will: preview tables to stimulate prior knowledge, make predictions, interact with print, and generate questions and answers about the content; understand that the format of a table supports comprehension of the relationship between data and the self-monitoring of responses to questions; practice analyzing word problems using the QAR strategy to predict a computation strategy and determine a response; understand that the type of question may indicate the need for different cognitive and mathematical actions;… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project adapted an existing problem-solving curriculum to help unemployed or underemployed displaced homemakers and single parents qualify for job placement and training. Forty-five adult learners from the New Choice program participated. Handouts adapted from a prior Math Employment project and instructor-created materials were used. Handouts from level 1 of the previous project were simplified even further. Instruction was supplemented with self-help groups. Findings indicated the following: 43 of 45 participants increased their math scores; 15 raised their scores 1-2 grade levels; and 28 raised their scores 3-5 grade levels using the Test of Adult Basic Education. Test scores from completion of teacher-generated word problems were substantially increased. Of the 45 participants, 28 entered training and 2 entered full-time employment. (Appendixes to the 11-page report include sample… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study we analyze and contrast approaches that future high school math teachers show when solving word problems with the use of pencil and paper and later, with the use of a Dynamic Geometry System (DGS). The resources, representations, strategies and forms of mathematical reasoning that the participants exhibit when they use GeoGebra in the process of problem solving are analyzed. The results show that the use of the tool favors the dynamic exploration of the concepts involved, the formulation of conjectures and the search for different arguments to validate the solution. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of these modules is to provide an introduction to the world of probability and statistics to accelerated mathematics students at the high school level. The modules also introduce students to real world math concepts and problems that property and casualty actuaries come across in their work. They are designed to be used by teachers and students of AP courses (primarily AB and BC Calculus) after the AP exam, but of course they can be used at any time. Statistical thinking is critical in today’s society. Data are everywhere and students will see and recognize misinterpretations all the time. “Probability & Statistics: Modular Learning Exercises” cover: (1) Basic Statistics Concepts; (2) The Normal Model; (3) Discrete Probability Distributions; and (4) Correlation and Regression. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Program for International Assessment of Adult Competencies, better known as PIAAC, developed a numeracy assessment framework that was used internationally to assess adults’ numeracy skills. The assessment gauged adults’ (aged 16-65 years) numeracy skills across a full range, from adults with very low levels of numeracy to college level math ability. PIAAC’s assessment framework is based on two concepts: math as being use-oriented and math proficiency as a continuum. While this framework was designed to measure adults’ numeracy ability in a structured assessment environment (including adults’ home with trained evaluators), it is useful beyond its original intent. This framework can be used to help teachers better understand how to differentiate instruction while still focusing on a particular theme or topic in a classroom, ensuring rich discussions… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This monograph offers an overview of the current research work carried out in Croatia and the surrounding countries, and specifically an interesting insight in teaching and learning issues in these countries. The authors discuss the need of the general population for becoming good problem-solvers in society of today, which is characterised by rapid technological changes and economic development. They argue that modern teaching methods are therefore needed. From the contributions in this monograph, it appears that awareness of future teachers’ beliefs and knowledge is present in the tertiary education. The studies investigate various aspects of pre-service and in-service teachers’ characteristics, like beliefs, knowledge, digital competencies or using ICT in teaching. But the contributions also portray another picture: mathematics education is becoming accepted as a field of scientific… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency with which students use math word problem strategies during and after schema-based instruction. It examines the extent to which students increase their ability to correctly solve word problems. It compares students’ attitudes toward mathematics problem solving before and after schema-based instruction. The study was conducted in a resource class with seven second-grade students on individualized education programs (IEPs). A single-subject research design was used. The schema-based instruction was implemented by the special education teacher in a small group setting. Students showed an increase in attempted and correct strategy use during instruction. Three students increased their attempts of strategy use from pretest to posttest, but only one student used the strategy correctly on all attempts. The mean problem-solving… Continue Reading →
