Eric.ed.gov – Tracking Transfer of Reform: Tracking Transfer of Reform Methodology from Science and Math College Courses to the Teaching Style of Beginning Teachers of Grades 5-12. Technical Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to determine whether reformed science and math courses at community colleges and universities were impacting education majors as they began a teaching career. The reformed courses, in contrast to typical lecture classes, implemented inquiry-based methods that emphasized deep understanding of fundamental science and math concepts. Trained evaluators, utilizing the Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol (RTOP) gathered a total of 86 classroom observations to gauge the level of reform that beginning teachers (1-3 years teaching experience) were implementing in grades 5-12. The preservice experience of the beginning teachers varied from having had zero to four reform courses. Results indicated that teachers who had completed reform college courses instructed in a significantly more reformed manner. Furthermore, analysis of years of teaching experience revealed that,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Beginning Reading and Math in PS 133, New York City. A Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This booklet describes the program in Harlem (PS 133) which is based upon Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s reading and mathematics in color. The program was primarily intended to test the teaching of Gattegno’s methods and materials. PS 133 was considered to be a good site for the program because it was stable, pedagogically traditional, and staffed by a large number of experienced teachers and a principal who was known to be a dedicated, competent administrator. In Gattegno’s reading program, color is used only for the purpose of introducing words, and once sounds are mastered, color is discarded. The use of color simulates a phonetic language. All groups of letters with the identical sound are represented by the same color. Thus the “o” in “so,””know,” and “though” belong to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Influences on Beginning Teachers’ Literacy-Related Instructional Beliefs: A Longitudinal Case-Study Comparison of Five Non-Traditional Math and Science Teachers.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper reports on a study to document influences on five beginning mathematics and science teachers’ instructional beliefs after a preservice methods course in secondary literacy. The participants were former military officers who had selected teaching as a second career. The study looked at: the teachers’ beliefs about uses of literacy in their content instruction from preservice through the second teaching year; influences the teachers perceived as affecting their beliefs; and how and why the teachers’ beliefs about literacy in their content instruction changed or remained constant over the 3-year period. Results showed: all five teachers’ beliefs had been influenced by the methods course; the teachers’ instructional beliefs became more elaborate and specific during their student teaching and first year of teaching; as student teachers, they were… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Citizen Scientist: Frank Von Hippel’s Adventures in Nuclear Arms Control Part 6. A Global Agenda and Beginning the Handoff to the Next Generation

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In this part, von Hippel discusses how his focus shifted in the first decade of the 21st century to a set of new concerns evoked by the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and the G.W. Bush administration’s retrograde policies with regard to nuclear arms control and nonproliferation. During this period, he co-founded the International Panel on Fissile Materials so that policy activists working in opposition to nuclear arms races and fissile material production in different countries could work together. He also focused on fostering another generation of activist scientists engaged with the nuclear arms control and nonproliferation agenda. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Pygmalion and the gender gap: do teacher expectations contribute to differences in achievement between boys and girls at the beginning of schooling?

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study examined the role of teacher expectations in the emerging gender gaps in reading and mathematics in the first year of schooling. Therefore, we first investigated whether boys and girls differ in their vulnerability to teacher expectancy effects. Second, we analysed whether gender-specific effects of teacher expectations contribute to gender achievement gaps. Our analyses were based on 1,025 first-grade students in Germany. Among the majority of the students, boys and girls did not differ in their vulnerability to teacher expectancy effects. Further analyses examined a subgroup of students who were targets of relatively strong teacher expectation bias and who showed unexpectedly high or low achievement gains. In this specific subgroup, girls’ mathematics achievement was more adversely affected… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Supporting Beginning Teachers to Engage in Relational Investigations of Teaching and Learning

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper examines a social design-based approach to supporting beginning elementary school teachers toward ambitious and equitable mathematics teaching. First-year teachers were enlisted as co-designers of a learning community aimed at supporting participants to build classroom math communities that leverage students’ diverse mathematical resources. Findings show that teachers collectively moved from thinking about teaching as fixing local problems to engaging in relational investigations of teaching and learning that centered students’ mathematical experiences. This shift supported teachers to take up and make progress toward complex problems of practice in their classroom teaching. This study has implications for how we conceptualize, analyze, and design for equity-oriented learning for beginning teachers. [For the complete proceedings, see ED606556.] Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Math Is More than Numbers: Beginning Bilingual Teachers’ Mathematics Teaching Practices and Their Opportunities to Learn

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this article, the author provides results from a 3-year, longitudinal study that examined two novice bilingual teachers’ mathematics teaching practices and their professional opportunities to learn to teach. Primary data sources included videotaped mathematics lessons, teacher interviews, and field notes of their teacher preparation methods courses. Findings revealed that the teachers were oriented toward differing views of learning that shaped how they organized students’ learning of language and mathematics during classroom instruction. While both teachers used similar teaching strategies to support students’ development of mathematics specific literacies, there were variances in how the learners were positioned within the classroom community and how and which repertoires of language practices were available and used during mathematics instruction. The teachers’ differing orientations toward learning are traced to their own… Continue Reading
