tandfonline.com – Educating teachers for the future school- the challenge of bridging between perceptions of quality teaching and policy decisions:reflections from Norway

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Teacher quality, or ‘the good teacher’ is not clearly defined in Norway, nor are there specific standards for measuring teacher quality. Everybody has an opinion about the good teacher, and teacher quality is frequently debated. Moreover, in Norway there is no systematic evaluation of teachers. Nevertheless, numerous reforms and popular discourses indirectly revisit and revise the formal qualification competences of teachers. This paper is an explorative journey into research, fiction and policy documents searching for how teacher quality has been, and is, perceived in Norway. The paper discusses relevant research, presents a historical contextualisation, my interpretations of selected fiction literature, and policy documents. I argue that teacher education has the responsibility of not merely translating policies into practice,… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Bridging Science Education’s Theory–Practice Divide: A Perspective from Teacher Education Through Topic-Specific PCK

The divide between theory and practice is an enduring challenge commonly attributed to disconnection in teacher knowledge between ‘knowing what to do’ (planning) and ‘doing what you know’ (enacting in class). We re-visited this divide from the new perspective of pedagogical content knowledge with the purpose of examining the ways in which topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge (TSPCK), evident in a planning-to-teach setting, translates in a classroom setting. Furthermore, we aimed to identify the factors that influence the translation. We… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Bridging the Gap: Sustaining Publication of a Newly Created Undergraduate Research Journal

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Once the excitement of creating a new journal fades and publication begins, a new challenge arises in sustainability. Augusta University published the first issue of their undergraduate research journal, The Arsenal, in 2016. Although the first two issues received consistent submissions and timely processing by the peer-reviewers, several unanticipated factors have influenced the journal’s continued publication. Some of these factors include graduation of the student editorial board, faculty turnover, research agendas for mentoring faculty, and institutional review board (IRB) requirements. This article identifies the challenges of sustaining publication of The Arsenal and discusses possible solutions to ensure continued publication. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Teaching about thermal expansion: investigating the effectiveness of a cognitive bridging approach

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Background: It is widely known that for many students it is very difficult to correctly predict how thermal expansion affects the appearance of a metal plate with a circular hole. Interviews with school teachers show that the source of this difficulty could stem from the fact that students’ internal visualizations of an arbitrary object’s thermal expansion often boil down to visualizing changes along one dimension only. Purpose: In this study, we investigated how students’ mental models about one-dimensional expansion can be extended for purposes of running mental simulations about expansion along two dimensions. Sample: To that end a pretest-posttest quasi-experiment has been conducted, with 100 students in the control group and 95 students in the experimental group. Design and methods: Whereas… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Theorizing Educational Leadership Studies, Curriculum, and Didaktik: NonAffirmative Education Theory in Bridging Disparate Fields

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Recent neoliberal policies and societal trends point toward new and perennial tensions for nation-state education, including curriculum/Didaktik and leadership thereof. These challenges affect governance/leadership and curriculum with changes in aims and values together in ways that demand coherence, yet the traditionally disparate fields of educational leadership and curriculum/Didtakik have developed separately in terms of approaches to theory and theorizing that have informed empirical studies over time. This article draws upon an analysis of theory/theorizing in these fields, as well as modern education theory and its core concepts, and discursive institutionalism to frame this issue and a larger project.
