However, both approaches are not without critique. Our own previous work (drawing on Bourdieu) highlights how FOK/FOI methodologies can result in surfacing exchange value (capital) in the home in ways that re-position some students’ access to the school curriculum, while leaving hegemonic practices of schooling unchallenged. In this paper, we propose a new theorization of funds as a cultural commodity of “knowing-in-practice”. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: African American women are underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields (Catsambis, 1994). The socialization and “under-education” of African American female students engenders ideas of inferiority, while the presence of an inferior race, sex and class, in one body, may produce an ideology of mediocrity. Data findings from NCES (national center for education statistics), College Board, the 2008-2009 Baccalaureate and beyond longitudinal study reaffirm African American girls’ weakness in math and science (NCES, 2009, 2011; College Board, 2011). These challenges affect governance/leadership and curriculum with changes in aims and values together in ways that demand coherence, yet the traditionally disparate fields of educational leadership and curriculum/Didtakik have developed separately in terms of approaches to theory and theorizing that have informed empirical studies over time. This article draws upon an analysis of theory/theorizing in these fields, as well as modern education theory and its core concepts, and discursive institutionalism to frame this issue and a larger project. tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study focuses on high school students’ profile choices and the choice for or against the Nature and Technology (NT) profile in the Netherlands. A mixed-methods approach is used to study cultural values that affect this choice. The quantitative part of the study shows that being female is negatively correlated with the choice for the NT-profile, irrespective of the grade average for mathematics, chemistry and physics. It further shows that students’ ethnic background does not have a significant effect on this choice. The qualitative part of the study reveals that students’ choice processes towards or away from NT can be categorised in three ideal types: the postmodern perfectionist, the pragmatic hedonist and the materialist maximalist.
