Eric.ed.gov – Some Reflections from Pre-Service Elementary Teachers’ Practice Teaching on the Area of Understanding Data in the Math-Teaching Course

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With developing technology statistical information and data sources become a very important issues and from primary school it has become necessary to gain the skills for making interpreting and making sense of data. These skills consist of collecting information, arrangement and analysis of collected data and the interpretation of the results. The duty of guiding students in their process of making statistical information meaningful falls upon teachers. This study, whose aim was to investigate prepared course content for sub-learning area in grade 1-4 math course and obtained experiences by pre-service elementary teachers in the schools they went as a part of teaching practice course, was conducted with nine fourth-year students attending an undergraduate program of elementary teaching in a state university during 2013-2014 academic year. Pre-service teachers… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Assessing the Association Between Precourse Metrics of Student Preparation and Student Performance in Introductory Statistics: Results from Early Data on Simulation-Based Inference vs. Nonsimulation-Based Inference

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The recent simulation-based inference (SBI) movement in algebra-based introductory statistics courses (Stat 101) has provided preliminary evidence of improved student conceptual understanding and retention. However, little is known about whether these positive effects are preferentially distributed across types of students entering the course. We consider how two metrics of Stat 101 student preparation (precourse performance on concept inventory and math ACT score) may or may not be associated with end of course student performance on conceptual inventories. Students across all preparation levels tended to show improvement in Stat 101, but more improvement was observed across all student preparation levels in early versions of a SBI course. Furthermore, students’ gains tended to be similar regardless of whether students entered… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Developing Knowledge for Teaching Graphing of Bivariate Categorical Data

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Due to the increased role of statistics in current curriculum standards, there is at present a call for attention to secondary teachers’ knowledge for teaching statistics in teacher education. This article reports the results of a study that answered this call by addressing mathematics teachers’ knowledge for teaching graphing of bivariate categorical data. Novel curriculum materials to develop such knowledge were written then implemented with mathematics teachers in courses at four post-secondary schools. Results showed that prior to use of the materials, teachers’ graphical competence was limited with teachers often utilizing frequencies when analyzing the data. Following use of the materials, they were more likely to correctly use relative frequencies in their analysis and expanded their knowledge of… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Applying Design-Based Research Findings to Improve the Common Core State Standards for Data and Statistics in Grades 4–6

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics have a widespread impact on children’s statistical learning opportunities. The Grade 6 standards are particularly ambitious in the goals they set. In this critique, experiences helping children work toward the Grade 6 Common Core statistics expectations are used in conjunction with previous research to identify ways in which the Grades 4–6 standards might be supplemented or revised to help maximize learning. It is suggested that opportunities for children to perceive datasets as aggregates and to draw reasonable conclusions about statistical data by attending to context should be purposefully introduced in Grades 4–5. Currently, the Common Core does not have explicit learning standards for these activities in fourth and fifth grade. It… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – A First Course in Data Science

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Data science is a discipline that provides principles, methodology, and guidelines for the analysis of data for tools, values, or insights. Driven by a huge workforce demand, many academic institutions have started to offer degrees in data science, with many at the graduate, and a few at the undergraduate level. Curricula may differ at different institutions, because of varying levels of faculty expertise, and different disciplines (such as mathematics, computer science, and business) in developing the curriculum. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth started offering degree programs in data science from Fall 2015, at both the undergraduate and the graduate level. Quite a few articles have been published that deal with graduate data science courses, much less so dealing… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Incorporating Open Data Into Introductory Courses in Statistics

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The 2016 Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report emphasized six recommendations to teach introductory courses in statistics. Among them: use of real data with context and purpose. Many educators have created databases consisting of multiple datasets for use in class; sometimes making hundreds of datasets available. Yet “the context and purpose” component of the data may remain elusive if just a generic database is made available. We describe the use of open data in introductory courses. Countries and cities continue to share data through open data portals. Hence, educators can find regional data that engage their students more effectively. We present excerpts from case studies that show the application of statistical methods to… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Discrimination with unidimensional and multidimensional item response theory models for educational data

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Achievement tests are used to characterize the proficiency of higher-education students. Item response theory (IRT) models are applied to these tests to estimate the ability of students (as latent variable in the model). In order for quality IRT parameters to be estimated, especially ability parameters, it is important that the appropriate number of dimensions is identified. Through a case study, based on a statistics exam for students in higher education, we show how dimensions and other model parameters… Continue Reading

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Increasingly students, particularly those in the social sciences, work with survey data collected through a more complex sampling method than a simple random sample. Failing to understand how to properly approach survey data can lead to inaccurate results. In this article, we describe a series of online data visualization applications and corresponding student lab activities designed to help students and teachers of statistics better understand survey design and analysis. The introductory and advanced materials presented are designed to… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Why We Should Teach Causal Inference: Examples in Linear Regression With Simulated Data

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Basic knowledge of ideas of causal inference can help students to think beyond data, that is, to think more clearly about the data generating process. Especially for (maybe big) observational data, qualitative assumptions are important for the conclusions drawn and interpretation of the quantitative results. Concepts of causal inference can also help to overcome the mantra “Correlation does not imply Causation.” To motivate and introduce causal inference in introductory statistics or data science courses, we use simulated data… Continue Reading
