Eric.ed.gov – Independence and Interdependence: An Analysis of Pre-Service Candidates’ Use of Focused Assignments on an Electronic Discussion Forum during the Initial Field Experience

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article describes a case study using an electronic learning platform for creating an interactive learning community through asynchronous discussion to enhance the initial field experience of secondary math and English teacher candidates enrolled in Field Experience. We identified three problems with the field experience course–lack of structure, isolation of the candidates in the field, and passivity of the candidates. To address these problems, we established three goals–to create a way for candidates to structure their reflections in the field, to create a learning community of pre-professionals, and to foster independence and assertiveness in our candidates. With these goals in mind, focused assignments were developed and implemented in an interactive online discussion forum. The results of this study have two important implications for teacher preparation. First, the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Tales from the Electronic Frontier: First-Hand Experiences of Teachers and Students Using the Internet in K-12 Math and Science.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document presents first-hand experiences of teachers and students using the Internet in K-12 math and science, as well as articles on getting the right hardware, choosing an Internet service provider, designing an online project, and fostering acceptable use. Chapters include: (1) “Something in the Air” (Linda Maston): a computer-assisted environmental investigation; (2) “Penumbra” (Greg Lockett): a cooperative astronomy project that led to one young woman finding friendship and a new mode of self-expression; (3) “Tall Shadows” (Karen Nishimoto): study of the Earth’s circumference using the Internet; (4) “Pedagogically Speaking” (Bill Barnes): an online class for fourth through eighth grade math teachers examining the best kinds of cooperative activites; (5) “Hoop Happenings” (Caroline Brennan and Joanna Yantosh): math problem solving via e-mail between elementary and middle school… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – MendelWeb: An Electronic Science/Math/History Resource for the WWW.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes a hypermedia resource, called MendelWeb that integrates elementary biology, discrete mathematics, and the history of science. MendelWeb is constructed from Gregor Menders 1865 paper, “Experiments in Plant Hybridization”. An English translation of Mendel’s paper, which is considered to mark the birth of classical and evolutionary genetics, is presented as an active document, with links to traditional reference material (e.g. glossaries, biographies, and the original German text) as well as images, tutorials, active commentaries, related Web sites, and animations. Users can choose to view any of several versions of the Mendel paper, each featuring different degrees of activity and annotation, and MendelWeb is designed to be accessible and useful to those running basic text browsers like Lynx, as well as full-featured browsers like Mosaic. MendelWeb,… Continue Reading
