tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract When in 2014 the STEM Career Interest Survey (STEM-CIS) was developed, the researchers could check this instrument with other target audiences. Also, the question remained if the instrument was applicable for both boys and girls. This article describes the development and validation of a Dutch language version of it, called the STEM-LIT instrument, an instrument to measure the interest of children aged between ten and 12 years in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), focusing specifically on children from families with low socio-economic status (SES). The instrument has been adapted and developed in five stages and tested among Dutch primary school pupils in groups seven and eight (ages 10–11 and 11–12). The instrument was first tested in two… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Background: Previous studies have investigated effects of out-of-school STEM activities aimed at stimulating children’s interest in science with positive results. However, research has not discussed the reasons why such activities are successful. Purpose: In this study, we address this gap by investigating which factors children themselves identified as interesting when they visited events at an out-of-school activity named The Children’s University. Sample: Children aged 8–12 participated in the study. Altogether, there were 353 children involved in the data collection. Design and methods: A mixed method design was used, including a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews in which children’s self-reported experiences were collected. Likert scale questions in the questionnaire were analysed based on descriptive statistics. The open-ended questions and data… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Background: There is a shortage of people in the STEM sector, and it has been argued that more needs to be done, especially to attract girls. Furthermore, there is a need to develop twenty-first-century skills. No studies seem to have explored the combination of activities in makerspaces and the use of drama to stimulate interest in STEM and development of 21st century skills. Purpose: This study focused on a project with a unique combination of makerspace activities and the use of drama. The research questions investigated the outcomes that could be identified from combining drama and activities in a makerspace, with regard to the development of interest in STEM and twenty-first-century skills.Sample: Ten girls aged 7–11 years participated.… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Gender disparities in STEM fields have been under extensive study, the focus of which has been on future career aspirations. However, the primary phases in gender differences are still ambiguous when examined from this perspective, possibly due to the fact that most of the studies have targeted samples of upper secondary school or college students. As such, in this study we examined the transient period to lower secondary school; our aim was to discover to what extent relationships between factors of students’ science interest and career perspectives differ between male and female. Based on previous studies and analyses, we selected three future career perspective variables – outcome, personal time, and innovation orientations – and three defining features of… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Interest and motivation significantly influence achievement; however, interest in immunology remains to be determined. Using a structured questionnaire, the current study assessed for the first time interest in immunology among biomedical graduate students in Ghana after a one-week introduction to immunology course. Our results revealed that approximately 80% of study participants expressed an interest in immunology. In addition, we showed that interest in immunology was independent of age and gender of the study participants. More interestingly, we observed that interest in immunology was primarily influenced by career choice. The findings from the present study have implications on immunology education and calls for investment in building capacity in immunology especially in developing countries. Link til kilde

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this paper, we provide an overview of the “Maths Inside” project, funded by the Australian Maths and Science Partnership Program (AMSPP). The overall aim of the AMSPP is to improve uptake and participation of students in mathematics and science at secondary and tertiary levels. In this research project, we aim to improve student interest in mathematics and support mathematics teachers in their professional learning, through provision of rich and investigative learning resources, including video case studies of CSIRO scientists and mathematicians. Data collection on the outcomes of the project is ongoing and will be reported in subsequent papers. Link til kilde

sciencedirect.com har udgivet: Highlights • Most teenage Australians who plan a teaching career abandon their plans before they turn 23. • Plans to pursue a teaching career stabilize in early twenties. • The gender gap in teaching career plans is similar at ages 16, 23 and 26. Abstract Prior research on teenage interest in teaching careers hinges on the assumption that many adolescents, who expect to become teachers, realise their plans in adulthood. However, little is currently known about whether this is the case for recent youth cohorts. This issue is explored here using the nationally representative data from the Australian PISA 2006 cohort who participated, between 2006 and 2016, in the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Youth. The findings indicate that two-thirds of teenage students who wanted to become teachers… Continue Reading →
