eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A conference sponsored by the National Institute of Education (NIE) examined some of the issues associated with the shortage of science and mathematics teachers. This report discusses problems related to the shortage and reviews strategies that have been undertaken to alleviate the shortage. Solutions are proposed and priorities are identified. These include: (1) curriculum improvement directed to make instruction more meaningful for the average student; (2) increased research on classroom learning and instruction; and (3) recruitment and retention of more competent teachers in the areas of science and mathematics. tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Once the excitement of creating a new journal fades and publication begins, a new challenge arises in sustainability. Augusta University published the first issue of their undergraduate research journal, The Arsenal, in 2016. Although the first two issues received consistent submissions and timely processing by the peer-reviewers, several unanticipated factors have influenced the journal’s continued publication. Some of these factors include graduation of the student editorial board, faculty turnover, research agendas for mentoring faculty, and institutional review board (IRB) requirements. This article identifies the challenges of sustaining publication of The Arsenal and discusses possible solutions to ensure continued publication. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Situated learning experiences such as research apprenticeships can help connect girls to the sciences, ultimately helping to achieve gender equity in the science workforce. The material resources available in research apprenticeships—such as research equipment, field gear, etc.—may be particularly consequential for building identification with science, as they are abundant and frequently hold disciplinary authenticity. However, most sociocultural studies of research apprenticeships have focused on cognitive-ideational or social aspects rather than on the material aspects of the learning setting. This paper investigates the association between different types of science-related material resources in the context of a geoscience and biology-focused research apprenticeship program for girls. The study employed a qualitative approach, drawing on theoretical constructs of communities of practice, identity… Continue Reading →

Abstract The present study illustrates the utility of applying multilevel mixture models in educational research, using data on the homework behavior of 1,812 Swiss eighth-grade students in French as a second language. A previous person-centered study identified 5 homework learning types characterized by different patterns of high or low homework time and effort. Via multilevel latent profile analyses (MLPAs), the dependence of homework learning types on between-classroom differences was investigated. Based on the proportions of homework learning profiles across… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Study Island is a practice and assessment tool that provides state-standards-aligned opportunities for students to practice their skills. It features a system of continual assessments with immediate feedback to adjust instruction and learning. When educators integrate Study Island into their instructional practices, it acts as a formative, ongoing assessment tool that provides students with a platform to practice or demonstrate their knowledge of taught standards. This approach reflects the elements of formative assessments as a process for monitoring progress and adjusting instruction. Research on formative assessment and progress-monitoring practices has demonstrated positive outcomes for student achievement (Bangert-Drowns, Kulik, & Kulik, 1991; Black & Wiliam, 1998; Fuchs & Fuchs, 1986; January et al., 2018; Stecker, Lembke, & Foegen, 2008; Stiggins, 1999; Van Norman, Nelson, & Parker, 2016; Wolf,… Continue Reading →

That study focused on the use of certain prosodic and lexical elements in the ClearSpeak speech style and served as a basis for further refinements in that style’s definition and implementation in the MathPlayer software. The primary parameters evaluated are students’ success in drawing conclusions about the content and structure of certain math expressions and their perceptions regarding the helpfulness of the pace and wording of different text-to-speech renditions of… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This paper takes the concept of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), which is well known in teacher education, and applies it in research methods education where it has not been previously used. It asks how experienced social science research methods teachers, who know their subject (method) well, teach advanced social research methods to others. Drawing on a wider, multi-method qualitative study conducted in the UK, the paper shows the participating teachers’ orientation to teaching methods and how they combine knowledge of content and pedagogy in generic and distinctive PCK. It shows specifically their use of data for translating methods to become readily knowable for students. The case is made for identifying PCK through dialogic means as a vehicle for… Continue Reading →
