Eric.ed.gov – The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) was published in 2010 and includes a complete collection of standards that are published and reviewed as a “common core” in which math skills have been extensively adopted. The recommendations provided have been entirely or partially adapted by more than 47 states of the US. Authorities have committed and incredible amount of time, money and resources in creating these new standards and additional effort will be required to implement these standards The new math standards address two established issues in US education, the ordinary quality of mathematics learning and equal opportunity in U.S. schools. It is a fact that deprived students are most likely to have inexperienced or under qualified teachers, and children from impoverished families are much less… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Getting Ready for the Common Core State Standards: Experiences of CPS Teachers and Administrators Preparing for the New Standards. Research Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The success of any education reform depends on many factors. A critical component is whether school staff are supportive of the initiative and view it as likely to improve educational outcomes. Equally important is whether school staff have the professional development opportunities they need to ensure their practice is aligned with the goals of the initiative. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has been preparing to implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) since 2011-12. Teachers were expected to teach the new English and Language Arts (ELA) standards by 2013-14 and the new math standards one year later, in 2014-15. This report describes teachers’ and administrators’ experiences preparing for this transition, using survey responses from the spring of 2014 and the spring of 2015. Survey questions focused on four… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Year 3 of Implementing the Common Core State Standards: Professional Development for Teachers and Principals

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Timely, ongoing, and effective professional development for teachers and principals will be critical to the successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These voluntary state-developed standards in mathematics and English language arts (ELA) outline the knowledge and skills that students in grades kindergarten through 12 are expected to learn to be prepared for college and careers. As of July 2013, the CCSS have been adopted in math and ELA by 45 states and the District of Columbia and by one additional state in ELA only. If teachers and principals are going to be prepared to help their students master the Common Core and pass the aligned assessments that will be ready in school year 2014-15, they will need professional development on various issues related to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Standards Implementation in Texas: Local Perspectives on Policy, Challenges, Resources, and Instruction

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Center on Standards, Alignment, Instruction, and Learning (C-SAIL) examines how college- and career-ready standards are implemented, if they improve student learning, and what instructional tools measure and support their implementation. The Center studies elementary and high school math and English Language Arts (ELA) standards, and has a special focus on understanding implementation and effects of CCR standards for English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities (SWDs). This analysis examines select data from a survey administered to districts, principals, and teachers in the state of Texas during the spring of 2016. A stratified random sampling technique was designed to ensure the sample was representative of districts in Texas. Forty-two Texas districts completed the survey. In every sampled elementary school, two fifth-grade math teachers, two fourth-grade ELA… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Competence in educational theory and practice: a critical discussion

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This paper first provides a brief overview of the history and current usage of the concept of competence in academic research, and then undertakes a critical discussion of how the term is currently used in educational policy. The running example used throughout the paper is competence in foreign language learning. The PISA study is discussed to demonstrate how the concept of competence has come to prominence in the international discourse on education in recent years. Following this, particular attention is given to the situation in Germany where there has been a shift towards competence as an aim of teaching in recent years, coupled with an increased focus on standards and accountability. The relationship between competence and standards is… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Standards Implementation in Kentucky: Local Perspectives on Policy, Challenges, Resources, and Instruction

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Center on Standards, Alignment, Instruction, and Learning (C-SAIL) examines how college- and career-readiness (CCR) standards are implemented, if they improve student learning, and what instructional tools measure and support their implementation. The Center studies elementary and high school math and English Language Arts (ELA) standards, and has a special focus on understanding implementation and effects of CCR standards for English Language Learners (ELLs) and students with disabilities (SWDs). This analysis examines select data from a survey administered to principals and teachers in the state of Kentucky during the spring of 2016. A stratified random sampling technique designed to ensure the sample was representative of districts in Kentucky was employed. In each of the 89 districts, 285 elementary schools were identified. In each of these elementary schools,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The State of State MATH Standards, 2005

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Two decades after the United States was diagnosed as “a nation at risk,” academic standards for our primary and secondary schools are more important than ever?and their quality matters enormously. In 1983, as nearly every American knows, the National Commission on Excellence in Education declared that “The educational foundations of our society are presently being eroded by a rising tide of mediocrity that threatens our very future as a Nation and a people.” Test scores were falling, schools were asking less of students, international rankings were slipping, and colleges and employers were complaining that many high school graduates were semi-literate. America was gripped by an education crisis that centered on weak academic achievement in its K-12 schools. Though that weakness had myriad causes, policy makers, business leaders,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Examining the Common Core State Standards in Agricultural Education

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) represent a shift in the American education system. Included in the CCSS are opportunities for agriculture teachers to integrate math and English language arts content into their curriculum. Using the theory of planned behavior, we sought to identify Oregon agriculture teachers’ attitudes, familiarity with, current level of integration, and professional development needs related to the Common Core State Standards. Our research identified the majority of responding teachers were somewhat familiar with the CCSS. Additionally, teachers had varying levels of agreement that the CCSS would help their teaching, yet the majority of agriculture teachers in our study reported they had somewhat implemented the CCSS. In an effort to identify the professional development needs of teachers concerning these standards, we used the CCSS… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Alignment of the easyCBM Grades 3-5 Math Measures to the Common Core Standards. Technical Report #1229

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Within a response to intervention system of teaching and learning, important instructional decision-making (e.g., implementation of targeted intervention) is regularly tied to the results of formative assessments administered to students throughout the academic year. The validity of these instructional decisions depends to an extent on the alignment between formative measures and the content standards on which classroom instruction is based. Specifically, formative assessments must be aligned to adopted content standards in order for teachers to make valid instructional decisions around individual student learning needs. In this technical report, we report on the alignment between easyCBM® grades 3-5 seasonal mathematics benchmark items and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Results suggest reasonable alignment to the standards overall, with areas of relatively stronger and weaker alignment across grade level… Continue Reading
