eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of tutoring low achievers on the concepts of carrying and borrowing before they were introduced in the classroom. Twelve low-achieving second-grade students were tutored on these concepts. The tutored children, along with members of two control groups, participated in a pretest covering these ideas. After the two-week tutoring period, members of all three groups participated in a mock classroom. The pre-remediated children performed significantly better than control group members on both types of problems (p less than .01), as well as in classroom participation (p less than .05). The initiative accomplishes this by drawing upon evidence-based research to develop practical tools and engaging support opportunities for middle grade campuses, allowing research-based practices to be brought to life in classrooms across the nation. This case study describes the development and implementation of math self-placement at American River. Math self-placement consists of a Web-based testing and information site that allows students, or potential students, to gauge their level of math proficiency prior to talking with a counselor or enrolling in classes. Math faculty members and administrators are hopeful that self-placement, as an alternative to traditional placement, will provide students with concrete knowledge and experience about math standards, since self-placement includes actual self-assessment instruments (tests), developed and approved by the college’s math faculty. In response, during the 2006 State of the Union Address, President Bush introduced the American Competitiveness Initiative (ACI) to promote policy that bolsters student achievement in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). At the Business-Higher Education Forum (BHEF) summer 2006 meeting, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings discussed provisions of the ACI that address teacher shortages in mathematics and science, and corresponding student academic readiness.
