tandfonline.com – The Swedish primary teacher education programme: at the crossroads between two education programme traditions

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In 2011, new teacher education programmes were introduced in Sweden. This policy case study examines the outcome of the reform, focusing on the pedagogic discourses in the examination practise of the primary teacher education programme, but also on the possible effects of dividing teacher education for primary teachers into two specialisations: for teachers of grades F-3 and 4–6. The point of departure is that the Swedish, and Nordic, teacher education programmes have been shaped by two traditions: the seminar tradition and the academic tradition. The study is based on Bernstein’s theories of pedagogic discourses and how these affect teachers’ professional knowledge base and professional identities. The results show that the primary teacher education above all prepares student teachers… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Looking for peace in the Swedish National Curricula

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study analyses, in the light of peace educational theory, the presence and absence of peace elements in the Swedish national curriculum for compulsory schooling. Using the theoretical framework developed within the international Peace Education Curricular Analysis Project, content analysis and mixed methods we identify how the Swedish curriculum underscore and lack the peace elements of recognizing violence, non-violent conflict transformation and positive peace. Our analysis shows that the Swedish curriculum supports teaching and learning which may help pupils to identify violence in society and internationally, lack many aspects of non-violent conflict transformation (especially conflict resolution) and emphasize positive peace in numerous but limited ways. We find that many dimensions of peace are underscored in the syllabus of… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Variations of Symbolic Power and Control in the One-to-One Computing Classroom: Swedish Teachers’ Enacted Didactical Design Decisions

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study provides new insights into Swedish teachers’ didactical designs when handling two contemporary challenges regarding the new national curriculum and the increasing digitalisation of schools through one-to-one computing initiatives. The research questions consider how teachers organise physical and digital resources in their classrooms as well as variations in teachers’ pedagogical communication. From a study of 23 one-to-one computing classrooms (using tablets), some ethnographic-inspired methods were applied based on classroom observation and recordings of teachers’ teaching. The findings show two distinct forms of teachers’ classroom organisation that indicate different didactical designs used by teachers to integrate one-to-one computing into the classroom. Variations in teaching resulted in a shift of symbolic power and control from teachers to students, which… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Transfer of learning in Swedish technical vocational education: student experiences in the energy and industry programmes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract One of the most important issues in vocational education is the interaction between learning at school and at different workplaces. Students need to transfer what they have learned in and between these different learning arenas. However, little agreement exists among researchers on how to conceptualise and empirically study transfer of learning. This article aims to enhance our understanding of this process in technical vocational education by adding a new perspective on transfer: the phenomenological lifeworld approach. Eleven interviews with students enrolled in the Energy and Industry programmes at a Swedish upper-secondary school were conducted. Three transfer themes emerged from the data: learning for new situations, variation and integration of theory and practice. The student perspective, based on the… Continue Reading

ABSTRACT The current article examined educational achievement at lower-secondary level in Sweden (Grade 9), using grades and national test results (NTR) as the dependent variables. Linear regressions and bivariate correlations indicated that the proportion of highly-educated individuals in each municipality was positively associated with grades and NTR and that the proportion of welfare recipients and non-natives, as well as rural location, had negative associations. In relation to two case studies with fewer observations, teacher certification rates were more strongly… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The Integration of Programming in Swedish School Mathematics: Investigating Elementary Mathematics Textbooks

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT We characterize the recently included programming content in Swedish mathematics textbooks for elementary school. Especially, the connection between programming content and traditional mathematical content has been considered. The analytical tools used are based on the so-called 5E’s, a theoretical framework of action, developed within the ScratchMath project, and Brennan and Resnick’s (2012) terms computational concepts and practices. The result uncovers “follow a procedure” as the dominating action, in which the concepts stepwise instruction and repeated pattern were frequent. Bridging between programming and mathematics is weak in the sense that the programming content does not enhance the possibility to explore mathematical concepts and ideas. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Swedish first-year engineering students’ views of mathematics, self-efficacy and motivation and their effect on task performance

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. We examine a group (N = 88) of Swedish first-year engineering students, their motivation, self-efficacy, and beliefs about the nature of mathematics, and how these relate to their task performance in mathematics. In our data, engineering students who emphasized the exact reasoning in their view of mathematics performed significantly better in a set of mathematical tasks than those who emphasized the applications of mathematics. Similarly, the higher self-efficacy and the intrinsic and utility values of mathematics relate to better performance in… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Opportunities to learn foundational number sense in three Swedish year one textbooks: implications for the importation of overseas-authored materials

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT In this paper we present statistical analyses of three textbooks used by Swedish teachers to support year one children’s learning of mathematics. One, Eldorado, is authored by Swedish teachers, another, Favorit, is a Swedish adaptation of a popular Finnish series and the third, Singma, is a Swedish adaptation of a Singapore series. Data were coded against the eight categories of foundational number sense, which are the number-related competences literature has shown to be essential for the later mathematical… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Proof-related reasoning in upper secondary school: characteristics of Swedish and Finnish textbooks

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Despite the central role of proofs in mathematics, research often shows that school textbooks offer limited support for the teaching and learning of proof-related reasoning. This study contributes to this field of research by studying Swedish and Finnish upper secondary textbooks on logarithms and combinatorics. Justifications in expository sections are analysed and students’ tasks are categorized according to the type and nature of reasoning they require. The findings imply that opportunities to learn proof-related reasoning are few, and are… Continue Reading
