tandfonline.com – The equalizing effect of teacher dashboards on feedback in K-12 classrooms

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Teacher dashboards provide real-time information about students’ performance and progress, which help K-12 teachers to adjust feedback to student’ specific needs during learning. Prior research indicated two problems with respect to how teachers provide feedback: (i) teachers do not always select the most effective feedback to support student’ learning and (ii) feedback is not allocated equally to students with different abilities. Specifically, process feedback is considered most effective yet is relatively scarce. In order to understand how dashboards influence the type and allocation of feedback, we compared characteristics of feedback given after dashboard consultation (dashboard-prompted feedback) to feedback triggered by teachers themselves or in response to students’ questions (human-prompted feedback) in thirty-five K-12 classrooms. Results showed that dashboards… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Identification of Socio-Economic Differences and Their Effect on the Teaching of Readiness for “New Math Concepts” in the Kindergarten. Final Report.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report is a continuation of a study conducted at the University of Wisconsin during the spring of 1967. The previous study, Technical Report #38, succeeded in teaching conservation of numerousness to small groups of kindergarten children, in a middle-class community. The purpose of the present study was to determine if the typical classroom teacher, in schools differing in socio-economic levels, could successfully use the lessons developed in the previous study to effect conservation of numerousness with kindergarten children. Four questions were considered – (1) can the typical classroom teacher teach the conservation lessons as successfully as a specially trained expert, (2) is the treatment of greater value for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds, (3) is the treatment of greater value for younger kindergarten children than for older… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The presence of students identified as having special needs as a moderating effect on their classmates’ reading comprehension scores in relation to other major class composition effects

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study investigates the impact of the presence of students identified as having special needs (SEN) on their classmates’ achievements in reading comprehension. Multi-level regression modelling was conducted with the data of more than 75,000 fourth graders of 4,937 classes in Austria. Students’ scores of reading comprehension were used as the dependent variable in the models. The number of students with SEN was used as the independent variable, besides other class-level predictors like the socio-economic status or the self-concept. To disentangle individual from classroom composition aspects, variables at the individual level were used as independent variables as well (gender, age, first language, number of books at home, socio-economic background, kindergarten attendance, and self-concept). Results show only a small… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The Effect of Studying in Selective Classes on the Change in Pupils’ Action-Control Beliefs During Lower Secondary School in Finland

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Tracking pupils based on their abilities or other aptitudes is a common practice in many countries. In Finland, selective classes with a special emphasis have become popular. The societal and individual effects of tracking are a topic of ongoing educational discussion. Tracking has been seen to increase educational inequality, but still it has been defended as an important practice enabling individualised and adjusted teaching. This study examined whether studying in a selective class with a special emphasis has an effect on the development of pupils’ action-control beliefs from grade seven to nine. Results showed that pupils who studied in classes with a special emphasis showed greater achievement and were more likely to have highly-educated mothers than pupils in… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The relative effect of pupil absenteeism on literacy and numeracy in the primary school

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT A literature search identified only 12 articles which had examined the relative effect of either attendance or absence on primary/elementary school children’s literacy and numeracy. However, with respect to the relative effect of both attendance and absence, no consistent picture emerged from the articles. Furthermore, for each of the articles, the conclusion about the relative effect was based on visual inspection of the relevant statistic. The second problem was overcome in the study presented in this article by using the British Ability Scales Word Reading and Basic Arithmetic scales to assess the literacy and numeracy of eleven-year-old Poor and Better Attenders. Significantly more of the former than the latter were found to have an arithmetic score significantly below… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effect of Using Exercise-Based Computer Games during the Process of Learning on Academic Achievement among Education Majors

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The aim of this study is to define whether using exercise-based games increase the performance of learning. For this reason, two basic questions were tried to be answered in the study. First, is there any difference in learning between the group that was given exercise-based games and the group that was not? Second, is there any difference in learning between the group that used exercise-based games at end of the process of learning and the group that was not applied this but taken the questions of exercises in game material? This research has been conducted within the subject of Testing and Evaluation in the program of Kocaeli University Primary Maths Teacher’s College. Experimental design with a pre test-post test control group was used in this study. Experimental… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Learning To Teach Math Differently: The Effect of “Investigations” Curriculum on Teachers’ Attitudes and Practices.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A number of initiatives have been successful in helping teachers change their knowledge and practices in teaching mathematics. This paper reports on the results of a reform effort using curriculum materials as a vehicle for change. The professional development program called “Insights and Investigations” incorporated four types of professional development experiences. Teachers met monthly in grade-level sessions with one of three mathematics educators on the Delaware SSI/PRoject 21 staff in order to get collegial support and encouragement as they implemented “Investigations” in their classrooms. According to the teacher participants, the combination of utilizing “Investigations” curriculum units in the classroom, having the opportunity to do “Investigations” with their colleagues before teaching it in the classroom, reflecting on their teaching and on student learning through written reflections and discussions,… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Expectancy-value theory as an explanatory theory for the effect of professional development programmes in formative assessment on teacher practice

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Research has identified characteristics of professional development programmes (PDPs) that are important for accomplishing change in teachers’ practice and student achievement. However, these characteristics do not predict and guarantee the outcomes of a specific PDP. In the present study the authors investigated whether the expectancy-value theory of achievement motivation can be used to explain teachers’ change of practice. Through teacher interviews and questionnaires the authors investigated why randomly selected year-7 teachers, after participating in a PDP on formative assessment, changed their practice in ways identified in an earlier study, and why these changes differed from those of year-4 teachers participating in a similar PDP. The results show that expectancy-value theory can be used to explain both the schoolyear-7… Continue Reading
