tandfonline.com – Tracking effects on achievement and opportunities of middle-high ability students: a case study in Switzerland

In Geneva, Switzerland, students in secondary 1 education are grouped into different tracks according to their academic level. The tracking system in Geneva has been reformed recently. Prior to the reform, the tracks were very hierarchical but less selective; following the reform, the tracks are still very hierarchical but the entry criteria are more selective and there is greater flexibility to move from one track to another. Using longitudinal data, this article compares these two types of tracking system and analyses the inequalities produced in terms of the skills acquired by students and the path taken once compulsory education is completed. Our analysis shows that the new tracking system following the reform has a major impact on students… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – On the sudden rise of Dutch science at the end of the nineteenth century: a core-periphery approach

This paper analyzes the remarkable success of Dutch scientists near the end of the nineteenth century, as exemplified by five Nobel laureates in the period 1901–1913. Some historians suggest that the key factor contributing to the sudden rise of Dutch science was the establishment of a new type of high school, called HBS, which generated unprecedented social mobility of middle-class pupils to Dutch universities. The HBS also provided a pathway for its science teachers to write a PhD thesis outside the walls of the university. Taking a core-periphery approach, we compare the effects of an HBS-background (periphery) and Royal Academy membership (core) on the recognition that Dutch professors. Consistent with core-periphery theory, we find that professors who taught… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Energy, history, and the humanities: against a new determinism

The study of past ‘energy transitions’ are being reinterpreted as possible guides to a low-carbon future. But little is known about the historians who shaped how we understand our transition into a predominantly hydrocarbon-based energy system. Before energy history emerged as a subfield, historians John Nef, Edward Wrigley, and Rolf Sieferle already explained the Industrial Revolution as a result of coal use. In unleashing industrialism, they argued that coal took on an historically decisive role. These notions of energy determinism will be the central concern of this paper. In revisiting their lives and work, it will be argued that in pursuit of a low-carbon future, we should not ignore the grave concerns posed by fossil energy use nor… Continue Reading

Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Multidisciplinary Peer-Mentoring Groups Supporting Knowledge Sharing in Doctoral Education

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Obtaining a doctoral degree requires acquisition of different types of skills and knowledge. The aim of this article is to explore multidisciplinary peer-mentoring groups (PMGs) facilitated by senior academics as a knowledge sharing practice in doctoral education. Drawing from interviews with participants of PMGs at a Finnish university, we found that the participants perceived that cultures and practices of doctoral education in departments and faculties, as well as limited support from supervisors might hinder knowledge sharing. They highlighted that a flat hierarchy and confidential atmosphere supported by the multidisciplinary group composition promoted knowledge sharing and emotional support. Based on these results, we argue that PMGs are a useful resource for facilitating knowledge sharing amongst doctoral researchers and thus… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The strange case of querying gove’s cultural capital legacy

The recent inclusion of cultural capital into the English Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (2019) caused a ripple of discontent within some educational circles, with some suggesting it is indicative of ‘white, middle-class paternalism’. Here, we consider the political rise of Bourdieu’s concept of ‘cultural capital’ within the English Education Inspection Framework (2019), given that it now affects all English schools subject to Ofsted’s inspection. We alsoexplore how one of the 19th Century texts in the GCSE English literature curriculum can be analysed through a queer prism, to offer a thought-provoking inclusive interpretation of the narrative and release its queer cultural capital. Finally, we invite classroom practitioners to deliberate their current pedagogical actions and consider adopting a queer pedagogy… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Teachers’ motivation to participate in continuous professional development: relationship with factors at the personal and school level

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Teachers’ motivation to participate in professional learning is a significant factor in explaining the effectiveness of continuous professional development programmes. The present study investigated how factors at teachers’ personal and school levels are related to their motivation to participate in professional learning activities. A questionnaire was completed by 472 Chinese teachers. Multivariate analysis revealed that several factors at the teacher level (teachers’ prior experience with learning activities, teaching experience, self-efficacy and conceptions of learning) and the school level (work and emotional pressure, colleague support and principal leadership) were related to their motivation to participate in professional learning. These findings are discussed in the context of the professional development of Chinese teachers. Implications are generated for teacher education and… Continue Reading
