The introductory section explains the way in which the series, entitled Math on the Job, will benefit high school students with the following disabilities: mental retardation, learning disabilities, and serious emotional disturbances. The second and third sections outline the scope of the series and provide guidelines for its use. Next, a math competency matrix is presented and explained. Six topics related to the career education concept are featured. “Sample Math Problems” was written for a class studying about jobs in a bakery, and the problems are ones that would be encountered in a bakery. “Careers as Related to Math” is a sample of how career education can be effectively correlated and integrated into math texts (Elementary School Mathematics published by Addison-Wesley) for grades 4, 5, and 6. Occupations requiring high school or college education and/or on-the-job training are listed, and the concepts required for most math-related occupations are itemized. Exhibiting strong math skills in elementary school is predictive of later high school completion and college attendance. To that end, the Making Pre-K Count and High 5s studies set out to rigorously assess whether providing high-quality math instruction, aligned across prekindergarten (pre-K) and kindergarten, could lead to long-term gains across a variety of domains for students growing up in low-income communities in New York City.
