eric.ed.gov har udgivet: At a national level, the supply of teachers has remained stable in recent years–however, at the state and local level, school districts have been wrestling with long-standing teacher shortages in a number of specific fields, including science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects; career and technical education (CTE); bilingual education; and special education. Schools and students in low-income and minority neighborhoods often face particularly significant challenges in terms of recruiting and retaining teachers in hard-to-staff subjects. The report looks at the challenge of teacher shortages facing public schools across the U.S., and the role that internationally educated and trained immigrant and refugee professionals can play in addressing these shortages. Eric.ed.gov – Math and Science Are America’s Future. National Math and Science Initiative Annual Report, 2008

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper presents the annual report of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) for 2008. Eighteen months ago, the National Math and Science Initiative did not exist. Today NMSI is helping lead the country forward in math and science. In just 18 months, NMSI has rolled out the first round of grants and has implemented programs in 14 vanguard states. Eric.ed.gov – Math Recovery: Making Our School Good and Our Students Successful

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article is an overview of how Flin Flon School Division in Flin Flon, Manitoba, used money received through grant funding to revamp its math programming in order to meet the needs of the students within the division. A combination of standardized test scores and individual teacher assessments revealed where student mathematical understanding was lacking. Specific teachers were then trained in particular math programs purchased through this funding. As well, additional math specialist positions were created to help the division’s students learn better, and therefore become more successful with the math curriculum. Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – A Decade in the Making: Early Math Education Initiative Seeks Broad Impact. Principles for Effective Education Grantmaking. Case Study No. 18

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: When CME Group Foundation (CME) was formed in 2007 with an endowment from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Trust, its founders set out to engage in grantmaking that would improve education from cradle to career and strengthen the region’s economy. During its first decade, nearly a quarter of CME’s grants targeted early childhood education with an emphasis on improving early math education. With students in the United States trailing students from other industrialized nations in math, CME’s leaders believed it was crucial to address the problem in the early years. Helping low-income children in Chicago build essential math skills would not only help them succeed in school but would also further the success and economic well-being of the state and the nation. From the beginning, CME’s executive director… Continue Reading
