tandfonline.com – Tracking down resistances: a co-design approach for a biomedical educational program on antibiotic resistance

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Professional societies and institutes have stressed the importance of a dialogue between scientists and the public over the past decades. Especially the life sciences include many highly relevant research topics pertaining not only to scientific progress but also to decision-making in society. Surprisingly, few educational researchers and biological scientists make interdisciplinary efforts to communicate life science topics to society in an adequate manner. In our project, scientists from evolutionary biology, medicine and biology education worked in an interdisciplinary manner to design an educational program to make scientific research on antibiotic resistance and cystic fibrosis accessible to students (ninth, tenth and eleventh graders). In this article, we explain the communication objectives from the science education researcher’s and the life… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Discourse-directed framing as communication strategy alters students’ concept of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance formation

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT One of the most urgent matters in current medicine is the preservation of antibiotic treatment options due to an increasing threat of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, increasing awareness by adapted science education and communication regarding this topic is of the utmost importance. This article shows that an out-of-school laboratory course using active learning techniques is a valuable contribution to traditional teaching inciting personal and social responsibility. Attitude toward science (BRAINS), value of science to society (MATS), situational interest and emotions were tested. The participants’ conception of antibiotics was evaluated by analysing follow-up mind maps. Generally, the laboratory course created positive feelings and situational interest. Compared to an instructor-directed frame, communication within an individually adapting discourse-directed frame… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – System dynamics modelling to formulate policy interventions to optimise antibiotic prescribing in hospitals

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Multiple strategies have been used in the National Health System (NHS) in England to reduce inappropriate antibiotic prescribing and consumption in order to tackle antimicrobial resistance. These strategies have included, among others, restricting dispensing, introduction of prescribing guidelines, use of clinical audit, and performance reviews as well as strategies aimed at changing the prescribing behaviour of clinicians. However, behavioural interventions have had limited effect in optimising doctors’ antibiotic prescribing practices. This study examines the determinants of decision-making for antibiotic prescribing in hospitals in the NHS. A system dynamics model was constructed to capture structural and behavioural influences to simulate doctors’ prescribing practices. Data from the literature, patient records, healthcare professional interviews and survey responses were used to parameterise… Continue Reading
