Abstract Flipped classrooms have become an interesting alternative to traditional lecture-based courses throughout the undergraduate curriculum. In this article, we compare a flipped classroom approach to the traditional lecture-based approach to teaching introductory biostatistics to first-year graduate students in public health. The traditional course was redesigned to include video lectures and online quizzes which the students were expected to complete before coming to class, followed by a short in-class lecture and time working on applied statistics problems in class.… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Diverse Perspectives on a Flipped Biostatistics Classroom

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT “Flipping” the classroom refers to a pedagogical approach in which students are first exposed to didactic content outside the classroom and then actively use class time to apply their newly attained knowledge. The idea of the flipped classroom is not new, but has grown in popularity in recent years as the necessary technology has improved in terms of quality, cost, and availability. Many biostatistics instructors are adopting this format, but some remain unsure whether such a change would benefit their students. One potential barrier to adopting a flipped classroom is the common misconception that only a single approach is available. Having adopted the flipped approach in their own courses, the authors participated in an invited panel at the… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The Flipped Classroom in Introductory Statistics: Early Evidence From a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract The flipped classroom (FC) inverts the traditional classroom by having students participate in passive aspects of learning at home and active aspects of learning in class with the guide of an instructor. The introductory statistics course for nonmath majors may be especially suited to the FC model given its unique challenges as a required course for students with varying mathematical skills and background. For example, these students often have low interest and high statistics-related anxiety. Recent studies suggest… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Merging flipped classroom approaches with the 5E inquiry model: a design heuristic

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Most often, flipped classroom approaches in science and mathematics classrooms follow a traditional approach to teaching, where students receive direct instruction as homework and have to apply and deepen their knowledge in a follow-up lesson. Little is known about the arrangements of in-class and out-of-class phases fostering learning through inquiry in flipped classroom scenarios. To support teachers’ lesson planning practices, we developed a design heuristic for flipped classroom scenarios based on the 5E inquiry model. We implemented this design heuristic in an online professional development course for secondary mathematics teachers and collected 18 lesson plans. To explore how participating teachers adopted the design heuristic in their lesson plans, we conducted a document analysis on our data. We identified… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Enhancing a Flipped Statistics First Year Course by Using Qt-Clickers

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT This paper focuses on the unique contribution of the QT-clicker regarding formative and summative assessment in a large flipped first year statistics module. In this module the flipped classroom as pedagogical model firstly substituted the traditional teaching model. QT-clickers were subsequently introduced to enable active and cooperative learning for face-to-face engagement inside the classroom. The various input capabilities of the QT-clicker, providing for the possibility of partial grade crediting, offer a distinguishing advantage. These clickers were initially only… Continue Reading
