eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The authors’ goal is twofold. First, they wished to produce a theoretically-based approach to this synthesis. Child-centered programs have a long history. However, concerns about children’s achievement, and the pressure of content-specific standards, have set up a perceived conflict, in which educators believe they are being asked to abandon child-centered approaches, or, at least, to compromise and squeeze in, as one teacher put it, “Literacy on Monday-Wednesday-Friday, math on Tuesday-Thursday, and socio-emotional during our shortened play periods.” They hope that their approach, if shown to be efficacious, will serve as a model that others can use to successfully and synergistically combine these strategies so the whole is more than the sum of its integrated, not conflicting, parts. Second, and more importantly, they are producing a rigorous evaluation… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report examines mathematical graphing utilities or function plotters for use in introductory algebra classes of more advanced courses. Each product selected for inclusion in this report is able to construct the graph of a given equation on the screen and serves as a utility which may be used by the student for an open-ended exploration of a mathematical concept or by the teacher as a demonstration tool. The products are classified into one of the following types: (1) general purpose graphing utilities; (2) demonstration tools; and (3) special utility programs. In general it was felt that the positive aspects of function plotters far outweigh the negative. The ability to automate the tedious process of plotting the graph of an equation enables students to examine more equations… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In the current investigation, we used structural equation mediation modeling to examine the relations between executive function (indexed by measures of working memory, shifting, and inhibition), decoding ability, and reading comprehension in a sample of 298 children aged 6 to 8 years (132 boys and 166 girls). Results indicated that executive function was mediated by decoding ability. When sex was examined as a moderator of these associations, a trend suggested that direct relations between executive function and reading comprehension were stronger for girls compared with boys; no significant differences were found for other direct and indirect relations. Taken together, these findings highlight the importance of executive function in supporting underlying integrative processes associated with reading comprehension and emphasize… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The quality of mathematics assignments from teachers to students is one important element that determines whether learning is effective or not. To make quality math assignments requires knowledge from the teacher about content and students, who are subdomains of mathematical knowledge to teach. This knowledge needs to be developed in prospective mathematics teachers since programmed teacher education. By focusing on one of the basic concepts in mathematics, namely the concept of function, research was conducted on 25 mathematics teacher candidates. Through interactions that occur in modified focus group discussions, we want to find out how prospective teachers construct knowledge about the concept of functions and difficulties of students. The results showed that in constructing the concept of functions and difficulties of students, teacher candidates worked backward, there… Continue Reading →

Assessment of statistical literacy can take the forms of tasks that require students to identify, translate, compute, read, and interpret data. In addition, statistical instruction can take many forms encompassing course delivery format such as face-to-face, hybrid, online, video capture, and flipped. In this study, we examined statistical literacy of graduate students using a validated assessment tool (the Comprehensive Assessment of Outcomes in Statistics; CAOS) across two increasingly popular delivery… Continue Reading →

We use Taylor’s formula with Lagrange remainder to prove that functions with bounded second derivative are rectifiable in the case when polygonal paths are defined by interval subdivisions which are equally spaced. As a means for generating interesting examples of exact arc length calculations in calculus courses, we recall two large classes of functions f with the property that 1+(f′)2 has a primitive, including classical examples by Neile, van Heuraet and Fermat, as well as more recent ones induced… Continue Reading →

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Students enrolled in introductory math courses, such as college algebra, deserve to do more than find answers and fix mistakes. We present one interactive digital activity, the Cannon Man “Techtivity,” which we developed to provide opportunities for students to develop an understanding of function, beyond just applying a rule, such as the vertical line test. With an accompanying facilitation guide, we describe how we promote instructor moves to privilege student reasoning. We provide student data to support the effectiveness of this approach. We conclude with implications for weaving such opportunities into the fabric of college algebra. Link til kilde
