Abstract Students learn many concepts in the introductory statistics course, but even our most successful students end up with rigid, ritualized knowledge that does not transfer easily to new situations. In this article we describe our attempt to apply theories and findings from learning science to the design of a statistics course that aims to help students build a coherent and interconnected representation of the domain. The resulting practicing connections approach provides students with repeated opportunities to practice connections… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Simulation and Meta Processing: Affective Component of Math Procedures.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes a simulation activity, which was coupled with Confluent/Gestalt meta-processing, that was designed to address the affective component of a mathematics procedures class for preservice teachers. The activity consisted of an explanation and demonstration for teacher educators. It is argued that a reconstruction of disposition towards mathematics is an essential component of effective professional education programs. In order for student teachers to acquire a positive disposition towards mathematical thinking, instructors must help these students to deconstruct their prior learning, which may have negatively impacted their attitudes toward mathematics, and to reconstruct a new understanding of mathematical processes. In the simulation which is presented, participants experience an intervention, characterized by Confluent/Gestalt meta-processing, that can be used with student teachers in a mathematics methods class. The intervention… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Introduction to “health informatics, healthcare quality and safety, and healthcare simulation: the new triad to advance healthcare operations”

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This special themed international issue explores the multiple facets of health informatics, healthcare quality and safety, and healthcare simulation from different parts of the world. The papers in this issue fall into two broad themes. The first theme uses the intersection to address better management of care including physical design layout. The second theme examines innovative uses of the triad to prevent critical and non-critical safety events. The collection of papers culminates with a position paper reporting on the interdependence that is emerging as an important triad for research and practice within medical education, system development and testing, and teamwork and communication and concludes with reducing imprecision and factual errors in handoffs. Findings from the special collection of… Continue Reading

Abstract Technological innovation in science provides complementary tools for exploring new teaching strategies within a pedagogical framework that promotes interaction between the teacher and the learner. This work is based on the implementation of a computer application modeling crystallographic material structures, in order to identify and study the different crystalline structures and their characteristics, based on the techniques of three-dimensional modeling covering the OpenGL library and the Euler rotation matrices, and developed by the C # programming language. The… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – How can we apply the models of the quality of life and the quality of life management in an economy based on knowledge?

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract The scientific substantiations of quality have been applied to models that pertain to mathematical statistics, the probability theory, the information theory, fuzzy systems, graphic methods, time series, and algebraic and numerical methods. To these, this article aims to present a new method of applying mathematical modelling in an economy based on knowledge, by using the concept of the definite integral, the composite function, and mathematical optimisation. The research methods used in the realisation of this article are bibliographic research, creation of new models, and problem-solving. Mathematical modelling, the simulation of the quality of life, etc. are methods and techniques of both theoretical and practical scientific approach, which are likely to lead to a better understanding of the role… Continue Reading

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT Missing data mechanisms, methods of handling missing data, and the potential impact of missing data on study results are usually not taught until graduate school. However, the appropriate handling of missing data is fundamental to biomedical research and should be introduced earlier on in a student’s education. The Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics (SIBS) provides practical experience to motivate trainees to pursue graduate training and biomedical research. Since 2010, SIBS Pittsburgh has demonstrated the feasibility of introducing… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Play It Again: Teaching Statistics With Monte Carlo Simulation

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT Monte Carlo simulations (MCSs) provide important information about statistical phenomena that would be impossible to assess otherwise. This article introduces MCS methods and their applications to research and statistical pedagogy using a novel software package for the R Project for Statistical Computing constructed to lessen the often steep learning curve when organizing simulation code. A primary goal of this article is to demonstrate how well-suited MCS designs are to classroom demonstrations, and how they provide a hands-on method… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – In Their Shoes: Teachers Experience the Needs of English Language Learners through a Math Simulation

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Given the increase in the number of culturally and linguistically diverse students in American schools, it is vital for teacher education programs to address the needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) in their courses. Mainstream, general education teachers who did not previously experience this student population in their classes are now seeing high numbers of ELLs among their students. Therefore, all teachers, not just specialist English as Second Language (ESL) or bilingual professionals, need to be prepared to work with ELLs (Lucas & Grinberg, 2008). Teachers’ attitudes and beliefs about ELLs can be influenced by their lack of empathy for these students’ experiences and backgrounds. Many pre-service and inservice teachers need not only to learn strategies to work with ELLs but also to feel what it is… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Symbulate: Simulation in the Language of Probability

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract Simulation is an effective tool for analyzing probability models as well as for facilitating understanding of concepts in probability and statistics. Unfortunately, implementing a simulation from scratch often requires users to think about programming issues that are not relevant to the simulation itself. We have developed a Python package called Symbulate (https://github.com/dlsun/symbulate) which provides a user friendly framework for conducting simulations involving probability models. The syntax of Symbulate reflects the “language of probability” and makes it intuitive to… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The revised Tennessee Eastman process simulator as testbed for SPC and DoE methods

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Engineering process control and high-dimensional, time-dependent data present great methodological challenges when applying statistical process control (SPC) and design of experiments (DoE) in continuous industrial processes. Process simulators with an ability to mimic these challenges are instrumental in research and education. This article focuses on the revised Tennessee Eastman process simulator providing guidelines for its use as a testbed for SPC and DoE methods. We provide flowcharts that can support new users to get started in the Simulink/Matlab framework, and illustrate how to run stochastic simulations for SPC and DoE applications using the Tennessee Eastman process.
