The modules were designed to support fundamental concepts in entry-level college mathematics courses. The second and third goals of this study were to determine the learner characteristics and strategies that affect student performance on the nine Web-based learning modules. The data was collected via an online survey from teachers working mainly in basic education in Finland. The teachers (N = 588) reported a positive stance toward multilingual learners. The greatest number of responses (44%) cited students’ intrapersonal qualities, for example students’ motivation to learn and their academic, social, and emotional successes, as a source of joy. The positive impact of diversity on the school community (14%) and the teachers’ own development (12%) were the next most common sources of joy. This study investigated the impact of a community school reform effort in an urban middle school. National measures for widening participation in HE, such as the Degree Apprenticeship Levy, have led to significant changes in learning background diversity of WBL cohorts, consequently increasing student requirement for additional learning-support in HE Institutions (HEIs). To address these challenges, an intervention strategy was formulated in collaboration with Aston University’s Learning Development Centre. Our methodology gradually embedded a provision of tailored learning-support sessions/workshops in mathematics and effective communication skills within WBL curricula. One recommended practice involves integrating the “big ideas” that are the foundation for understanding mathematics and science across the curriculum. Teachers also need to create a classroom climate that is supportive and content rich. Grouping students into pairs or triads supports student needs. Special educators can collaborate with other teachers by creating a bank of instructional activities on selected math and science topics.
