eric.ed.gov har udgivet: While Michigan students learn a variety of skills in their time at school, perhaps the most important charge of public schools, beyond providing a safe and healthy environment, is to ensure that students are learning their three fundamental skills: reading, writing and arithmetic. Unfortunately, the achievement levels of Michigan public school students raise doubts about the quality of public education in the state. This volume has been written to assist policymakers at the state and local levels who want to initiate and support teacher quality reforms to improve K-12 public education in the state. The author describes shortcomings in public education in the state and discusses the research consensus that good teachers matter, investigating whether certification, experience, graduate degrees, academic ability and high licensure exam scores make… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Center on Standards, Alignment, Instruction, and Learning (C-SAIL) examines how college- and career-readiness (CCR) standards are implemented, whether they improve student learning, and what instructional tools measure and support their implementation. Established in July 2015 and funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, C-SAIL has worked closely with its five partner states–California, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Texas–to explore their experiences with CCR standards-based reform, particularly regarding students with disabilities (SWDs) and English language learners (ELLs). This report examines how the state of California is continuing CCR standards implementation during a time of transition. For the purposes of this report and in keeping with C-SAIL’s focus, the concentration is on implementation of California’s English language arts (ELA) and math standards.… Continue Reading →

It surveys the various frames of learning: formal learning in the regular and in the gifted class, and the learning of math in the enrichment programs for the gifted — both in the Hebrew an in the Arab sectors. The second part of this chapter summarizes all the existing non-formal programs — acceleration as well as enrichment — for the mathematically gifted child and adolescent. It includes descriptions of these programs, their target audience, the subject learnt in them and the level of studying, the prerequisites — if any, and the contribution to the students in terms of contents as well as certificates or diplomas. The third part of… Continue Reading →

What many of these reports truly leave behind, however, is the reality that state governments–not the federal government–have the strongest impact on the work of America’s 3.1 million teachers. With that in mind, three years ago the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) began the process of analyzing states’ teacher policies. NCTQ analysts sifted through tens of thousands of pages of state codes, regulations and rules, regularly corresponding with state officials who graciously provided their important knowledge and perspectives. The “State Teacher Policy Yearbook” is the first project of its kind to provide a 360-degree detailed analysis of any and every policy that states have that… Continue Reading →

The document begins with a brief description of the presentation’s objectives and content. The remainder of the document consists of the following presentation handouts: (1) excerpts from Oklahoma legislation regarding high school graduation requirements affecting students attending technology centers; (2) the program approval letter sent to the technology center; (3) a description of the math program approval process; (4) information… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study describes key challenges and necessary supports related to implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) identified by rural math educators in the Northeast. The research team interviewed state and district math coordinators and surveyed teachers in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont, to assess their most pressing challenges and associated needs. Key challenges included time and support for teachers to change their instructional practices to meet the CCSSM, availability of high-quality instructional materials, and opportunities for collaboration. The report was produced in response to input from the Northeast Rural Districts Research Alliance (NRDRA), one of eight research alliances working with REL Northeast & Islands. This “Stated Briefly” report is a companion piece that summarizes the results of another report entitled “Gearing… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Common Core State Standards, standards in literacy and math for K-12 that have been adopted in more than forty states, are intensifying the academic pressures on young learners. In general, these standards do not reflect how young children learn and are not developmentally appropriate. The author of this essay shows that selected Common Core math standards for Kindergarten-Grade 3 are not grounded in the large body of research on how children learn mathematics. Young children cannot ordinarily grasp mathematical concepts as early as the standards require. To meet the Common Core State Standards, teachers will be forced to teach ideas that sail over children’s heads. Children will learn “verbalisms,” memorizing statements they do not understand. They will learn to accept answers on the basis of what… Continue Reading →

The analysis is divided into three parts: (1) The first section examines how Illinois public schools serve 2 million students by spotlighting performance on key academic milestones such as 4th-grade reading, 8th-grade math, college readiness in core subjects and postsecondary graduation; (2) The second section examines the interlocking set of reforms that state education leaders, legislators and advocates have crafted to lay the foundation for future academic growth since the State We’re In: 2010. The report also illustrates how the various initiatives fit together to lay a strong academic foundation for Illinois going… Continue Reading →

As a result of completion of this module, which is itself a cluster of nine mathematics learning modules, the elementary education student will: a) gain a knowledge and understanding of the concept of elementary school mathematics; b) have a deeper understanding of the specific topics than would be expected of an elementary student; c) realize and appreciate the logical development of material from precise definitions based on intuitive concepts to facts derived from these concepts; d) increase his confidence in his own mathematical ability; e) see mathematics as a body of interdependent knowledge; and f) realize that mathematics proficiency in the mechanical processes of mathematics is not… Continue Reading →
