Eric.ed.gov – Troops-to-Teachers: Program Brings More Men and Minorities to the Teaching Workforce, but Education Could Improve Management to Enhance Results. Report to Congressional Committees. GAO-06-265

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With the 2002 enactment of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA), GAO was mandated to review the Troops-to-Teachers program, which provides financial assistance and counseling to help military personnel obtain their teacher licenses, especially in priority subject areas, such as math and science, and find employment in high-need districts and schools, as well as public charter schools. The U.S. Department of Education oversees the program, which received nearly $15 million in fiscal year 2005. This report identifies: (1) the number and characteristics of program participants and factors affecting participation; (2) the recruitment and retention of participants in high-need districts and priority subject areas; and (3) the steps Education has taken to facilitate program management. The following are appended: (1) Objectives, Scope, and Methodology; (2) Comments from… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Math Olympics 2000/2002: Primary Mathematics Fun for Communities of Children and Adults.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The materials and ideas in this document are intended to be used by teachers in schools in order to bring adults and children together to experience good mathematics. It features an evening of hands-on mathematics scheduled for one night a week for four weeks. Students and adults come together to share mathematics activities, solve problems, and have fun with mathematics. The activities are intended for primary students. Sessions include measurement and geometry, number concepts and problem solving, estimation and calculators, and data collections and probability. Descriptions of each session and a list of materials are presented. The description of each session includes directions for preparations to be done prior to the event, guidelines on how to present each activity, and solutions to some of the explorations. tandfonline.com – A distinction between working memory components as unique predictors of mathematical components in 7–8 year old children

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Despite evidence for the involvement of working memory in mathematics attainment, the understanding of its components relationship to individual areas of mathematics is somewhat restricted. This study aims to better understand this relationship. Two-hundred and fourteen year 3 children in the UK were administered tests of verbal and visuospatial working memory, followed by a standardised mathematics test. Confirmatory factor analyses and variance partitioning were then performed on the data to identify the unique variance accounted for by verbal and visuospatial working memory measures for each component of mathematics assessed. Results revealed contrasting patterns between components, with those typically visual components demonstrating a larger proportion of unique variance explained by visuospatial measures. This pattern reveals a level of specificity… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – MATHCOUNTS School Handbook: Math Is Not a Spectator Sport, ’98-’99.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate 7th- and 8th-grade students’ interest and achievement in mathematics. Teachers and volunteers coach students beginning each fall and continuing throughout the year. Participating schools can select individuals or four-person teams to compete in on-site competitions. Students compete in local meets in February, winners progress to state contests in March, and the top four scorers and top coach at the state competition represent their state at the national finals in May. Each year the MATHCOUNTS question writing committee selects and announces a special topic designed to stimulate student interest in mathematics. The special topic for the 1998-99 MATHCOUNTS program is Investigation and Exploration. This book provides detailed information about the competition, activities, and suggested workouts that can… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Voices from the Field: Collaborative Innovations in Early Childhood Educator Preparation

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Voices from the Field: Collaborative Innovations in Early Childhood Educator Preparation” is jointly published by the Illinois Education Research Council (IERC) and the Illinois Board of Education (IBHE), and highlights the accomplished work of many of the state’s two- and four-year faculty to redesign early childhood educator preparation programs to meet regional and state workforce needs. This edited book has chapters authored by EC faculty from both the 2-year and 4-year sectors and provides clear, tangible examples of how universities across Illinois worked together, often with regional employers, to design pathways for early childhood educators to earn the state’s industry-recognized Gateways credentials while taking college coursework leading to degrees. Each chapter has a unique focus and together, their “Voices” provide significant insight into the innovative partnerships that… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – MendelWeb: An Electronic Science/Math/History Resource for the WWW.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper describes a hypermedia resource, called MendelWeb that integrates elementary biology, discrete mathematics, and the history of science. MendelWeb is constructed from Gregor Menders 1865 paper, “Experiments in Plant Hybridization”. An English translation of Mendel’s paper, which is considered to mark the birth of classical and evolutionary genetics, is presented as an active document, with links to traditional reference material (e.g. glossaries, biographies, and the original German text) as well as images, tutorials, active commentaries, related Web sites, and animations. Users can choose to view any of several versions of the Mendel paper, each featuring different degrees of activity and annotation, and MendelWeb is designed to be accessible and useful to those running basic text browsers like Lynx, as well as full-featured browsers like Mosaic. MendelWeb,… Continue Reading
