Eric.ed.gov – Mathematics: Essential Research, Essential Practice. Volumes 1 and 2. Proceedings of the 30th Annual Conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is a record of the proceedings of the 30th annual conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA). The theme of the conference is “Mathematics: Essential research, essential practice.” The theme draws attention to the importance of developing and maintaining links between research and practice and ties in with the joint day of presentations with the 21st biennial conference of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT). This special feature highlights the benefits of collaboration between researchers, practicing classroom teachers, and curriculum developers. Volume 1 contains the following papers: (1) The Beginnings of MERGA (Ken Clements); (2) Teaching and Learning by Example: The Annual Clements/Foyster Lecture (Helen L. Chick); (3) Introducing Students to Data Representation and Statistics (Richard Lehrer); (4) Studies in the Zone… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – MATHCOUNTS School Handbook: Math Is Not a Spectator Sport, ’98-’99.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate 7th- and 8th-grade students’ interest and achievement in mathematics. Teachers and volunteers coach students beginning each fall and continuing throughout the year. Participating schools can select individuals or four-person teams to compete in on-site competitions. Students compete in local meets in February, winners progress to state contests in March, and the top four scorers and top coach at the state competition represent their state at the national finals in May. Each year the MATHCOUNTS question writing committee selects and announces a special topic designed to stimulate student interest in mathematics. The special topic for the 1998-99 MATHCOUNTS program is Investigation and Exploration. This book provides detailed information about the competition, activities, and suggested workouts that can… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Learning To Teach Math Differently: The Effect of “Investigations” Curriculum on Teachers’ Attitudes and Practices.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A number of initiatives have been successful in helping teachers change their knowledge and practices in teaching mathematics. This paper reports on the results of a reform effort using curriculum materials as a vehicle for change. The professional development program called “Insights and Investigations” incorporated four types of professional development experiences. Teachers met monthly in grade-level sessions with one of three mathematics educators on the Delaware SSI/PRoject 21 staff in order to get collegial support and encouragement as they implemented “Investigations” in their classrooms. According to the teacher participants, the combination of utilizing “Investigations” curriculum units in the classroom, having the opportunity to do “Investigations” with their colleagues before teaching it in the classroom, reflecting on their teaching and on student learning through written reflections and discussions,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Achievement Effects of Four Early Elementary School Math Curricula: Findings from First Graders in 39 Schools. NCEE 2009-4053. Executive Summary

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this large-scale, national study is to determine whether some early elementary school math curricula are more effective than others at improving student math achievement, thereby providing educators with information that may be useful for making adequate yearly progress (AYP). This report presents results from the first cohort of first grade in 39 schools participating in the evaluation during the 2006-2007 school year, with the goal of determining the relative effects of different early elementary math curricula on student math achievement in disadvantaged schools. The report also examines whether curriculum effects differ for student subgroups in different instructional settings. A competitive process was used to select four curricula Investigations in Number, Data, and Space; Math Expressions; Saxon Math; and Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics) that represent… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Professional Development through Technology-Integrated Problem Solving: From InterMath to T-Math

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The ability to integrate technology into instruction is among the characteristics of a competent mathematics teacher. Research indicates that the vast majority of teachers in Turkey believe the use of computers in education is important, but have limited knowledge and experience on how to use technology in their instruction. This paper describes the T-Math project (http://www.t-math.org), which adapted the InterMath (http://intermath.coe.uga.edu) knowledge base for mathematics teachers in the United States and developed relevant resources for professional development of Turkish mathematics teachers to guide them in constructing useful strategies for their students while developing as expert mathematics teachers. Examples of mathematical investigations adopted and developed in the T-Math project are presented as well as the anticipated challenges and subsequent strategies for integration.
