She had uneven skills, and while algebra was impossible, she did well in courses in which she could use her visual-thinking and associative-thinking skills. Her visual thinking skills enabled her to excel at her chosen career of designing livestock equipment. The author describes how visual thinkers like her are good at hands-on work. MakerSpaces are organizations in which members sharing similar interests in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) gather to work on self-selected projects. Proponents of MakerSpaces highlight the implicit benefits arising from participants’ increased engagement with complex technical content in a voluntary, authentic context. A major contributing factor to this is that students with disabilities are required to be in least restrictive environments and given access to the general curriculum in the major subjects like math and science as mandated by federal legislation (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 2004; No Child Left Behind, 2001). This parallel mixed methods design study (Newman, Newman, & Newman, 2011) investigated inclusion strategies with classroom observations, teacher interviews, and archival document reviews. The focus was on nine middle school teachers, six of whom were math and science teachers, in inclusive classrooms and the curriculum modifications/instructional accommodations they were using for their students with autism. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the use of a basic math skill application on an iPad to increase basic math fluency. As part of a classwide academic intervention, the study was conducted with 10 students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities enrolled in a special education school.
