eric.ed.gov har udgivet: As schools work to implement the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), a team at Stanford University found that project-based learning is an effective framework for engaging students. The team used project-based learning, group activities, and performance-based assessments to design an effective, engaging curriculum. Over a three-year period, the team conducted research which showed that the curriculum led to gains in both student engagement and learning outcomes (as measured by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium’s math and English language arts tests, the California English Language Development Test, and a science pre- and post-assessment). eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In the last two decades, mathematics teachers have shown a great deal of interest in how students learn mathematics through journal writing. I have also used journals in mathematics classes for the last five years. Based on the analysis of more than 1800 journal entries written by approximately 200 students in the last five years, I conclude that journal writing has potential to aid in student mathematical learning even though teachers need a large amount of time to examine student journals and provide feedback. Math journals not only help instructors in understanding students’ feelings, likes, and dislikes about classes but also help students to demonstrate their mathematical thinking processes and understanding. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project adapted an existing problem-solving curriculum to help unemployed or underemployed displaced homemakers and single parents qualify for job placement and training. Forty-five adult learners from the New Choice program participated. Handouts adapted from a prior Math Employment project and instructor-created materials were used. Handouts from level 1 of the previous project were simplified even further. Instruction was supplemented with self-help groups. Findings indicated the following: 43 of 45 participants increased their math scores; 15 raised their scores 1-2 grade levels; and 28 raised their scores 3-5 grade levels using the Test of Adult Basic Education. Although some think it may enliven the delivery of maths and science in classrooms, the social and economic rationales are those that have initiated this movement. Spurred on by the global financial crisis, it is hoped that coordination and integration of STEM activities will better equip a workforce for dealing with the contemporary nature of business and industry, and encourage more school leavers to seek further training and employment in areas of engineering and science. Although calculations and getting the right answer have traditionally been the focus of mathematics at the secondary level, other topics have recently begun to be addressed, such as mathographics, or the relationship between art and mathematics, and creative constructions and shapes.
