Eric.ed.gov – Winona State University Graduate Education Learning Community, Rochester, Minnesota 2005-2006 Anthology of K-12 Action Research Papers. [Volume 6]

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: These papers are partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Science Degree in Education at Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota. The cohort included a variety of licensure areas that represent most levels and content areas of K-12 education. The students were encouraged to keep their questions and hypothesis directed at specific issues in their teaching environment. The papers follow American Psychological Association (APA) format. Papers in this volume include: (1) Will the Implementation of Individualized Self-Paced Instruction via the Accelerated Math Software Program Improve Math Competency for Target math Students? (William Theisen); (2) Will the Ongoing Practice of Presidential Physical Fitness Skills Help Students to Improve Their Fitness Testing Scores throughout Eight Weeks? (Jacob Tietje); (3) Will Teaching Eighth Grade Reading through Fiction or… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Application of Videodisc Technology to the Diagnosis of Math Skills.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Briefly presented are the rationale and procedures used to develop and validate an interactive videodisc program to assist in diagnosing difficulties in mathematics in grades 1-3. The mathematics assessment program is described as 408 criterion-referenced items divided into seven strands. Questions are administered until a student makes three consecutive errors; then the student is branched to the next section in a strand. At the teacher’s option, the test can be administered in either English or Spanish. Information is also included on equipment configurations possible among videodisc players, microcomputers, touch screens, and printers, and disc capacity is noted. Finally, comments on formative evaluation needs are given. (MNS) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Articulation between High School and CEGEP Science Post-Reform: Understanding the Gap

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Reforms in K-12 science education are global. New national science curricula were introduced in the United States (NRC, 1996), in Canada (CEMC, 1997), and in Europe (European Commission 2007). In this article, the impact of these reforms on college students in Quebec is studied. Articulation between high school and college sectors is viewed through the lens of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) high school and college faculty. Faculty of both communities experienced stress as the first education reform curricula cohorts entered college. Results of a diagnostic test developed by CEGEP faculty to assess college preparedness found no difference in math and science content knowledge when pre-reform cohorts were compared with cohorts instructed with the reform curriculum. Improvements were observed in problem solving skills, which has led to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Performance and Preparation: Alignment between Student Achievement, Teacher Ratings, and Parent Perceptions in Urban Middle-Grades Mathematics Classrooms

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The middle grades are a critical transition period in students’ mathematics trajectories, as students move from arithmetic to the more complex and abstract concepts of algebra. Teachers’ and parents’ judgments of students’ math abilities in these years are important to instructional planning and decision making for teachers, and can advise parents and students on future course placement. This study specifically examined teacher and parent judgments of students’ performance and preparedness for the next grade level in 5th and 6th grades mathematics. Results demonstrate that teacher and parent perceptions of students’ abilities are not calibrated to national norms, but to local contexts. Our findings are similar to other work suggesting that high poverty school contexts may provide teachers and parents a false comparative context for judging how well… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Conceptual and Practical Challenges of Taking Learning Trajectories to Scale in Middle School Math

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper reports on a design-based implementation study of the use of a diagnostic classroom assessment tool framed on learning trajectories (LTs) for middle grades mathematics, where teachers and students are provided immediate data on students’ progress along LTs. The study answers the question: “How can one characterize the challenges encountered when a school implements a diagnostic assessment system around learning trajectories at scale?” by identifying three explanatory themes: shifting to classroom assessment, understanding the concept and content of the LT, and seeing the results as a call to action. Each theme is discussed with references to observed activities and discussions with participants and related to the challenges connected with taking the concept of LTs to scale.
