Eric.ed.gov – Learning Information System Effects on Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Scores for five subjects (Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies in grades 2 through 8) from the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program were analyzed for several hundred Tennessee grade schools. Schools which owned the Accelerated Reader learning information system (a computer program which allows teachers to monitor and manage student literature-based reading) were compared with schools that had not purchased AR. Schools that owned AR outperformed others in all grades and subjects. (Contains five figures and five tables of data; an appendix contains a brief introduction to the Accelerated Reader.) Eric.ed.gov – The Application of Videodisc Technology to the Diagnosis of Math Skills.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Briefly presented are the rationale and procedures used to develop and validate an interactive videodisc program to assist in diagnosing difficulties in mathematics in grades 1-3. The mathematics assessment program is described as 408 criterion-referenced items divided into seven strands. Questions are administered until a student makes three consecutive errors; then the student is branched to the next section in a strand. At the teacher’s option, the test can be administered in either English or Spanish. Information is also included on equipment configurations possible among videodisc players, microcomputers, touch screens, and printers, and disc capacity is noted. Finally, comments on formative evaluation needs are given. (MNS) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Fun with Math: Real-Life Problem Solving for Grades 4-8.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This book was developed for teachers, youth group leaders, after-school child care providers, and parents, who may not have the time or the expertise to develop strategies for preparing students to be effective problem solvers. The content is organized in a pyramid style to make it easy to locate and grasp the information provided. Information on effective strategies for teaching general real-life problem solving is provided first. Similar information specific to real-life math problem solving follows. Together these two sections lay a foundation to prepare teachers to successfully deliver the learning activities subsequently provided. The Learning Activities section is organized by strand as identified by the Ohio Mathematics Proficiency Outcomes. Each section begins with an index of the activities included in that strand. Eric.ed.gov – River Falls Mall Math Trails: Connecting Elementary Mathematics to the World.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This collection of activities demonstrates how the study of elementary mathematics can be extended beyond the school and involve teachers and students in investigative, problem-based experiences. The activities include topics in geometry, concept of number, algebra, measurement, graphing, statistics, and probability, and are organized into five different math trails. With this method of organization, up to 100 elementary students can participate in the activities on the same day. Each math trail has 10 activities and each activity utilizes the particular attributes of the section of the mall in which it is situated. Students collect the necessary data at the mall and then complete the activities upon returning to their classrooms by interpreting the data and applying their previous learning and understanding in mathematics to solve a real-life… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – PLATO Elementary Math Software, Fairview Elementary, Dayton, Ohio. Preliminary Study. PLATO Evaluation Series.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The use of PLATO (registered) elementary school software in Fairview Elementary School, Dayton, Ohio, was studied. PLATO software had been used in Title I mathematics classes for the last 3 years. The Title I teacher used PLATO software as an integral part of her class instructional strategy. Mathematics achievement data were analyzed for 88 Title I students over the 3 school years. Pretest and posttest mathematics scores were obtained for the Ohio State Performance test in mathematics and for parallel mathematics tests. Four percent of the Title I students scored at the proficient level on the fourth grade mathematics pretest. By the end of the year, 24% of the students were proficient in mathematics, representing a large and educationally meaningful gain in performance. Students at the lower… Continue Reading
