eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This case study presents a descriptive portrait of how one general mathematics teacher transformed her classes from a computational to a conceptual orientation. The outcomes of the transformation for student learning and instruction are discussed. The findings suggest student gains in computational competence, mathematical effort, and attitude via concept-oriented instruction exceeded notably the gains of students in other classes where instruction was computationally oriented. The study employed field-research methods including observations, interviews, and the collection of student data across the project’s three years to capture and describe the nature and effects of the instructional interventions. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Using a cross-cultural perspective, researchers studied the “math avoidance syndrome,” which has reached crisis proportions among American Indians, at two elementary schools on Utah’s Northern Ute Reservation and Wisconsin’s Oneida Indian Reservation in 1980. Researchers gathered data by observing math instruction at the schools and by interviewing parents, teachers, tribal officials, and a group of students from third and fourth grade classrooms. They also discussed with tribal elders each tribe’s style of computation and problem solving. Results showed that, contrary to widely held beliefs, neither degree of traditionality nor sex of student served as an accurate predictor of student math attainment or interest in math. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Representatives from the Michigan Department of Education and the Center for Educational Performance and Information requested assistance in estimating Michigan’s capacity to adequately staff its high schools to meet the course requirements of the new Michigan Merit Curriculum. The study team devised a formula to estimate the number of additional full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers needed for each subject at each Michigan high school. The formula was calculated using Michigan-specific values for key variables. Such an analysis may be particularly useful when new graduation or course requirements are being planned.
