Eric.ed.gov – Constructivists Online: Reimagining Progressive Practice. Occasional Paper Series 34

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this issue of the Occasional Paper Series, the authors reimagine progressive pedagogy within the framework of digital pedagogy and online practice. The issue begins with “Notes from the Special Issue Editors,” Helen Freidus, Mollie Welsh Kruger & Steven Goss. In the first set of essays, “Inside the Online Classroom,” the authors present the experiences of educators who have entered the square room but have refused to be limited by its constraints. These are teacher educators who have designed their courses for the online venue. Some enthusiastically chose to teach online; others were mandated to do so. Regardless of how their journey began, each author describes the work she or he is doing to bring constructivist practice online. To the surprise of each of these educators, they… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Pamela Kaye’s General Math Class: From a Computational to a Conceptual Orientation. Research Series No. 172.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This case study presents a descriptive portrait of how one general mathematics teacher transformed her classes from a computational to a conceptual orientation. The outcomes of the transformation for student learning and instruction are discussed. The findings suggest student gains in computational competence, mathematical effort, and attitude via concept-oriented instruction exceeded notably the gains of students in other classes where instruction was computationally oriented. The study employed field-research methods including observations, interviews, and the collection of student data across the project’s three years to capture and describe the nature and effects of the instructional interventions. At the end of the intervention period, students and instruction were organized in ways that focused student interest, attention, and involvement on the learning of mathematics. Many illustrative segments of classroom interactions… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – How Stable Are Value-Added Estimates across Years, Subjects and Student Groups? What We Know Series: Value-Added Methods and Applications. Knowledge Brief 3

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Value-added models measure teacher performance by the test score gains of their students, adjusted for a variety of factors such as the performance of students when they enter the class. The measures are based on desired student outcomes such as math and reading scores, but they have a number of potential drawbacks. One of them is the inconsistency in estimates for the same teacher when value added is measured in a different year, or for different subjects, or for different groups of students. Some of the differences in value added from year to year result from true differences in a teacher’s performance. Differences can also arise from classroom peer effects; the students themselves contribute to the quality of classroom life, and this contribution changes from year to… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Participation in a Teacher Incentive Program and Student Achievement in Reading and Math. Economics Working Paper Series B-91-04.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study was conducted to assess the first year of full implementation of a teacher incentive program (TIP) in South Carolina. The study examines the relationship between student achievement and teacher participation in one of several incentive model programs. The research also explores award winning teachers and their association with higher gains by students in reading and mathematics achievement scores. A stratified random sample of schools was selected from which all TIP award recipients and a matched control sample of nonparticipants were selected as subjects, limiting the study to classroom teachers of reading and/or math in grades 1-6 during the 1988-89 school year. Relevant characteristics for all teachers and their classes were recorded, along with achievement data for students. Results demonstrate that participants in TIP are associated… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Literature Connections in Six Current Math Series for Grades K-2.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standard #2 (communicating aids students to clarify their thinking) emphasizes that reading, writing, discussing, and listening to mathematics are all vital parts of learning and using math. Six of the 12 math series chosen for California’s elementary program list titles of children’s trade books useful for supplementing lessons. A random selection of trade books listed in the six series was made to determine whether or not the book qualified as literature for classroom use. From this selection, a recommended literary book can be chosen for each of 12 different math topics for the early grades. A sample lesson plan could help integrate V. Williams’”A Chair for My Mother” into the second-grade math curriculum. Some literary selections from the primary grades… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Constructing a Secure Mathematics Pipeline for Minority Students. Math Research-Based Decision Making Series 9504.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report examines issues in the low achievement of American students in mathematics, with emphasis on the low representation of minority students in this field. American myths about mathematics which emphasize the importance of innate ability rather than hard work are seen as reinforcing racial and gender stereotypes about who can do mathematics. Examples of prominent mathematicians and physicists whose lives counter these myths are offered. Comparisons are made showing that American students at all levels lag behind their foreign counterparts in mathematics achievement. Details of these comparisons and how they have influenced reform efforts in mathematics education are considered. Specific barriers to mathematics achievement experienced by minority students are identified and statistics showing minority underrepresentation in this field are detailed. The Strengthening Underrepresented Minority Mathematics Achievement… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – PLATO Elementary Math Software, Fairview Elementary, Dayton, Ohio. Preliminary Study. PLATO Evaluation Series.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The use of PLATO (registered) elementary school software in Fairview Elementary School, Dayton, Ohio, was studied. PLATO software had been used in Title I mathematics classes for the last 3 years. The Title I teacher used PLATO software as an integral part of her class instructional strategy. Mathematics achievement data were analyzed for 88 Title I students over the 3 school years. Pretest and posttest mathematics scores were obtained for the Ohio State Performance test in mathematics and for parallel mathematics tests. Four percent of the Title I students scored at the proficient level on the fourth grade mathematics pretest. By the end of the year, 24% of the students were proficient in mathematics, representing a large and educationally meaningful gain in performance. Students at the lower… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Working Together, Making Changes: Working in and out of School To Encourage Girls in Math and Science. Encouraging Girls in Math and Science Series.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This brochure, one in a series of four, is designed to assist people working in schools and in the community as they work together to encourage girls in mathematics, science, and engineering. Six sections discuss the reasons for and ways to work together to make changes. The first section describes what special programs can offer schools, and reciprocally, what schools offer special programs. The second section offers a rationale for making changes that will attract more women into mathematics and science related fields. The third section provides seven suggestions, based on evaluation and research, that help make collaboration work, and identifies five practices that, based on experience, should not be done. The fourth section presents a model that has enabled teachers to double the amount of hands-on… Continue Reading
