eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The summer of 1983 Reading and Mathematics with Athletics program in New York City provided supplementary remediation in reading and math to 2,157 handicapped New York City students by incorporating sports activities and concepts into instruction. The program was highly effective in meeting its proposed goals and showed marked improvement over previous years in both implementation and effectiveness. In reading, 87.4 percent of the students meeting attendance criteria mastered at least two new reading skills and 72.8 percent mastered three or more. In math, 87.3 percent mastered two or more new skills and 72.1 percent mastered three or more. (In both areas in the two previous years, 60 percent mastered two new skills and less than one third mastered three.) In addition, staff were enthusiastic about the… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is a report of a pilot programme of the SHINE in Secondaries Saturday school transition intervention. The programme aims to improve attainment by focusing on literacy and numeracy and revisiting areas where pupils are struggling through a creative curriculum approach and enrichment opportunities. The Saturday programme is run by teachers from the school for 25 weeks throughout Year 7. Schools are responsible for developing their own curriculum of activities to suit the abilities and needs of their pupils following guiding principles specified by SHINE. The programme is designed to run for approximately 60 pupils staffed by four qualified teachers, three teaching assistants and three peer mentors all recruited and employed by the host secondary school. This evaluation was set up as a pilot study with four… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document presents the evaluation results for the Title VII Special Alternative Instructional Program grant to Cicero Public School District 99 (Illinois) for the 1994-95 school year. This was the third year of funding and implementation of this grant, which provided summer school funds with emphasis in building literacy through the use of mathematics and science. A program director, 18 teachers, and 5 staff members served 180 students in grades 3 through 6 in the evaluation year. In the course of the evaluation, several on-site visits were made, and many pieces of additional data were analyzed. The program was designed to increase literacy development for students who have achieved some oral proficiency in English and are designated Limited English Proficiency (LEP). A dual purpose was to increase… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report presents findings, after one year of program implementation, from the Evaluation of Enhanced Academic Instruction in After-School Programs–a two-year intervention and random assignment evaluation of adapted models of regular-school-day math and reading instruction in after-school settings for students in grades 2 through 5. This evaluation seeks to determine whether the enhanced after-school instruction improves math or reading proficiency over what students would achieve in regular after-school programs, as measured by test scores. The evaluation also examines the impacts of the enhanced after-school instruction for subgroups of students based on their prior academic performance and grade level. The evaluation seeks to ascertain whether the enhanced after-school instruction affects other in-school academic behavior outcomes, as measured by reports from regular-school-day teachers of student engagement, behavior, and homework… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In 1998, Congress reauthorized and amended the “Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA)”, creating, under Title II, the Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants Program for States and Partnerships. One initiative under this amendment, the partnership grants program, funded partnerships among colleges of education, schools of arts and sciences, and local school districts. Congress designed the partnership initiative as one of several pre-“No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)” efforts to support accountability for teacher preparation and to improve the work of teacher-preparation programs. It was anticipated that the collaboration among the partners would result in the successful implementation of reforms holding teacher-training programs accountable for producing high-quality teachers and providing sustained and quality preservice field experiences and professional development opportunities. This evaluation report focuses on the 25 grantees of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This qualitative case study reports on processes and outcomes of the National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded System-Wide Change for All Learners and Educators (SCALE) project at the California State University, Northridge (CSUN). It addresses a critical challenge in studying systemic reform in complex organizations: the lack of methodologies that incorporate technical, social, cultural, and cognitive elements. Guiding questions include (a) how the institutional context influenced the project, (b) whether project activities affected science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) instruction, interdisciplinary collaboration on preservice programs, and inter-institutional collaboration on in-service programs, and (c) if and how change initiatives are accepted and incorporated. In-depth interviews (N = 34), relevant documents, and observation data were collected in 2006 and 2007. Findings identified several factors that supported and several that inhibited achievement… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study was conducted to assess the first year of full implementation of a teacher incentive program (TIP) in South Carolina. The study examines the relationship between student achievement and teacher participation in one of several incentive model programs. The research also explores award winning teachers and their association with higher gains by students in reading and mathematics achievement scores. A stratified random sample of schools was selected from which all TIP award recipients and a matched control sample of nonparticipants were selected as subjects, limiting the study to classroom teachers of reading and/or math in grades 1-6 during the 1988-89 school year. Relevant characteristics for all teachers and their classes were recorded, along with achievement data for students. Results demonstrate that participants in TIP are associated… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project was undertaken to implement the employability, reading, and math skills of disadvantaged students in vocational education. Included in the project were the following activities: (1) field tests, evaluation, and dissemination of a mathematics skills curriculum guide for disadvantaged learners; (2) field tests and revision of guidelines for establishing, operating, and evaluating co-op and mainstream programs for the disadvantaged; and (3) implementation of a series of small-group workshops for teachers of disadvantaged students on implementing employability, reading, and mathematics skills in vocational programs. Separate mathematics, employability, and reading skills curriculum guides and an administrator’s manual for planning, developing, and implementing mainstream, self-contained, or co-op programs for the disadvantaged were developed during the course of the project. An independent review by a third-party evaluator indicated that all… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Mathematics Mastery programme is a whole-school approach to teaching mathematics that aims to raise attainment for all pupils and close the attainment gap between pupils from low income families and their peers. The programme aims to deepen pupils’ conceptual understanding of key mathematical concepts. This clustered Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) investigated whether implementing the Mathematics Mastery programme led to improvement in Year 7 pupils’ maths test scores. It was intended that schools would also begin to use the programme in Year 8 in the second year of implementation, and continue until the approach was in place across the school. 44 schools from London and the South East participated in the trial, with a total sample of 5,938 pupils. Participating schools received training and resources to support… Continue Reading →
