tandfonline.com – The link between flipped and active learning: a scoping review

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Flipped learning in higher education is becoming increasingly widespread. Although the number of flipped learning articles has increased since 2011, systematic reviews of flipped learning have been criticized for lacking a theoretical framework. The aim in this article is to explore the link between flipped learning and active learning: specifically, which theoretical frameworks are described. A scoping review was adopted as the research methodology. The selected studies indicate that this link between flipped learning and active learning is rarely explicitly addressed or operationalized. Approximately 65% of the 435 full-text articles retrieved do not explicitly connect their research to theory or a conceptual framework. The remaining 155 studies included for analysis refer to a mix of pedagogical terms or… Continue Reading

Abstract We developed and tested strategies for using spatial representations to help students understand core probability concepts, including the multiplication rule for computing a joint probability from a marginal and conditional probability, interpreting an odds value as the ratio of two probabilities, and Bayesian inference. The general goal of these strategies is to promote active learning by introducing concepts in an intuitive spatial format and then encouraging students to try to discover the explicit equations associated with the spatial… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Active learning engagement in teacher preparation programmes – A comparative study from Qatar, Lebanon and China

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study investigated student teachers’ preferred active learning strategies, and those which they actually received during their teacher preparation programmes. An explanatory mixed methods research design was adopted, including a survey completed by 308 participants and group interviews involving 38 participants. Data were gathered from student teachers completing their university education in three countries: Qatar, Lebanon, and China. Results indicated the prevalence of and a preference for a passive mode of instruction among student teachers as a convenient approach that would guarantee good grades from assessment procedures favouring memorization. Further, several inconsistencies between the quantitative and qualitative data revealed challenges in reconciling the theory-practice gap, changing perceptions towards alternative teacher roles, and realigning assessment procedures with innovative teaching… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT A course community (CC) was formed to facilitate the implementation of active-learning materials in the Introductory Statistics course at a large southeastern U.S. university. Instructors met every two weeks for the semester before and the semester of the implementation. The CC helped instructors improve their content knowledge and pedagogical skills. Results show improvement in teacher attitudes and in student scores. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Active Learning in Computer-based College Algebra

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract We describe the process of adjusting the balance between computer-based learning and peer interaction in a college algebra course. In our first experimental class, students used the adaptive-learning program ALEKS within an emporium-style format. Comparing student performance in the emporium format class with that in a traditional lecture format class, we found an improvement in procedural skills, but a weakness in the students’ conceptual understanding of mathematical ideas. Consequently, we shifted to a blended format, cutting back on… Continue Reading
