eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Among the reported proven positive results of early world Language (WL) study are improved cognitive abilities and “higher achievement test scores in reading and math” (Stewart: 11), which are expected student performance outcomes for the Common Core Standards. The future viability of Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (FLES) programs, however, is fragile at best, in today’s educational arena. FLES programs that have essentially concentrated their student performance expectations on basic communication skills and cultural content in the target language may therefore need to include a content-enriched STEM focus in order to seek and establish a viable presence in the elementary school curriculum. The authors of this paper suggest that proponents of FLES integration into the nation’s schools need to identify disciplinary literacy as the common denominator connecting… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: One can’t throw a stone without hitting a STEM initiative these days, but most science, technology, engineering, and math initiatives–thus the STEM acronym–overlook a fundamental problem. In general, the workforce pipeline of elementary school teachers fails to ensure that the teachers who inform children’s early academic trajectories have the appropriate knowledge of and disposition toward math-intensive subjects and mathematics itself. Prospective teachers can typically obtain a license to teach elementary school without taking a rigorous college-level STEM class such as calculus, statistics, or chemistry, and without demonstrating a solid grasp of mathematics knowledge, scientific knowledge, or the nature of scientific inquiry. In this report, the authors focus on the selection and preparation of elementary school teachers, most of whom will be required to teach mathematics and science… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With developing technology statistical information and data sources become a very important issues and from primary school it has become necessary to gain the skills for making interpreting and making sense of data. These skills consist of collecting information, arrangement and analysis of collected data and the interpretation of the results. The duty of guiding students in their process of making statistical information meaningful falls upon teachers. This study, whose aim was to investigate prepared course content for sub-learning area in grade 1-4 math course and obtained experiences by pre-service elementary teachers in the schools they went as a part of teaching practice course, was conducted with nine fourth-year students attending an undergraduate program of elementary teaching in a state university during 2013-2014 academic year. Pre-service teachers… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Sixty-two elementary pre-service teachers enrolled in a mathematics methods course were asked to “draw math” at the beginning and end of the semester. These drawings were used to examine the initial perceptions and how these changed by the end of the semester of methods and field experiences. Findings describe the various drawings and possible meanings behind the drawings. These drawings help explain the vision of mathematics that teacher candidates have before and after exploring teaching methods and implementing these methods with elementary students. This study provides insight into the experiences and images that pre-service teachers associate with both positive and negative emotions towards mathematics. Rich student dialogue about the drawings led to teacher reflection on how their emotions, attitudes, and experiences influence the way they teach mathematics… Continue Reading →

ABSTRACT Open Educational Resources (OER) have the potential to replace commercial learning materials in education. An empirical examination of this potential was conducted, comparing the end-of-year mathematics test results of 12,110 elementary school students clustered within 95 schools from five school districts in the state of Washington in the United States of America. Of this group, 6796 students used open learning materials, and 5314 used commercial educational resources. When three years of test scores were considered, there were no… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: With a national need to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM), elementary pre-service teachers must be provided with ample opportunities to increase their own knowledge and confidence in STEM disciplines. This article describes a Math Block experience developed for a special population of non-traditional students in an Early Childhood Unified program. The block blended a math content course with a math methods course and was co-taught by a mathematician and teacher educator. Link til kilde

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Preservice elementary teachers hold a variety of beliefs about mathematics and mathematics learning, which influence their teaching. Previous research has shown that preservice elementary teachers believe that mathematics is doing arithmetic. However, it is unclear if preservice elementary teachers truly believe that mathematics is only arithmetic, or if they simply have a difficult time describing their views on mathematics. In this study, preservice elementary teachers were asked to provide metaphors for mathematics and mathematics learning in order to illuminate the preservice teachers’ beliefs about mathematics. The metaphors were analyzed to reveal twelve different categories of belief. Approximately one-fourth of the metaphors suggested negative views about mathematics and mathematics learning. Approximately 44% of the metaphors described mathematics and mathematics learning as something that one must engage in as… Continue Reading →
