eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Mathematics Mastery programme is a whole-school approach to teaching mathematics that aims to raise attainment for all pupils and close the attainment gap between pupils from low income families and their peers. The programme aims to deepen pupils’ conceptual understanding of key mathematical concepts. This clustered Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) investigated whether implementing the Mathematics Mastery programme led to improvement in Year 7 pupils’ maths test scores. It was intended that schools would also begin to use the programme in Year 8 in the second year of implementation, and continue until the approach was in place across the school. 44 schools from London and the South East participated in the trial, with a total sample of 5,938 pupils. Participating schools received training and resources to support… Continue Reading →

The U.S. Department of Education oversees the program, which received nearly $15 million in fiscal year 2005. This report identifies: (1) the number and characteristics of program participants and factors affecting participation; (2) the recruitment and retention of participants in high-need districts and priority subject areas; and (3) the steps Education has taken to facilitate program management. The following are appended: (1) Objectives, Scope, and Methodology; (2) Comments from… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This booklet describes the program in Harlem (PS 133) which is based upon Dr. Caleb Gattegno’s reading and mathematics in color. The program was primarily intended to test the teaching of Gattegno’s methods and materials. PS 133 was considered to be a good site for the program because it was stable, pedagogically traditional, and staffed by a large number of experienced teachers and a principal who was known to be a dedicated, competent administrator. In Gattegno’s reading program, color is used only for the purpose of introducing words, and once sounds are mastered, color is discarded. The use of color simulates a phonetic language. All groups of letters with the identical sound are represented by the same color. Thus the “o” in “so,””know,” and “though” belong to… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This is the fourth biennial report to Congress on the implementation of the “Elementary and Secondary Education Act’s” Title III State Formula Grant Program (also known as the English Language Acquisition State Grants Program). This report provides information reported by states to the U.S. Department of Education regarding services provided for children served under Title III to ensure that all limited English proficient (LEP) students attain English proficiency and are achieving in reading or language arts and in mathematics at the same high level set by the states for all students. Under the State Formula Grant Program, states also are accountable for the education of immigrant children and youth. In this report, the U.S. Department of Education presents data reported by the 50 states, the District of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Study of School Turnaround (SST) examines the change process in a diverse, purposive sample of schools receiving federal School Improvement Grants (SIG) from 2010-11 to 2012-13. With the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the SIG program underwent three major shifts. First, ARRA boosted total SIG funding in fiscal year 2009 to approximately 6.5 times the original 2009 appropriation through Title I, section 1003(g) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). SIG funds were distributed to states by formula based on each state’s Title I share. States then had to competitively make SIG awards to districts with eligible schools. Second, ARRA targeted funds at only the very worst schools–those that were in the bottom 5 percent of performance and had… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This report summarizes the mathematics component of Individually Prescribed Instruction (IPI). The first section outlines the overall goals, specific objectives, and philosophy of IPI; the organization of the materials; and the procedures for their use, with emphasis on the altered role of both students and teachers. The next section describes the origins of IPI, and names the key personnel (listing their philosophy and relevant research activities) and sources of funds. The third section describes the development of the IPI materials. The organization of the agencies concerned, the original development plan and subsequent modifications are outlined. Actual developmental procedures are detailed including the selection of demonstration schools, criteria for pilot schools, retraining of administrators and teachers, and formative evaluation.Final sections of this report outline summative evaluation, describe envisaged… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) is a school-based social and emotional learning (SEL) curriculum that aims to help children in primary school manage their behaviour, understand their emotions, and work well with others. PATHS consists of a series of lessons that cover topics such as identifying and labelling feelings, controlling impulses, reducing stress, and understanding other people’s perspectives. It is delivered twice weekly in 30-40 minute lessons by teachers to all children in a given class, typically in the slots allocated for Personal, Social and Health Education. This curriculum is supplemented by activities that support the application of new skills during the school day and activities that are sent home to parents that cover the topics taught in class. In this trial, 45 participating schools from Greater… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This document reviews the work of the Maryland Mathematics Commission (MMC). The mission of the MMC was to review and provide recommendations on the following critical issues, all of which have the potential to influence mathematics learning in Maryland: (1) improve achievement in mathematics at every level, in every school and school district; (2) a balanced mathematics curriculum, pre-K-12; (3) qualified teachers in all mathematics classrooms; (4) daily instructional time in mathematics for all students; (5) establish the role of technology; and (6) raise public awareness about the value of mathematics for all students. The core of the report contains background information, current status, vision, and recommendations, including their rationale for the work analyzing the key areas of achievement, curriculum, instruction, teacher quality, technology, and outreach. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Accelerated Math and Science (AMS) Project is a 3 year program funded by the California Migrant Education Program Improvement Program. It targets 6th, 7th, and 8th grade low-achieving migrant students who are 2 to 4 years behind their language peer group. Two questions guided the second year evaluation study for the Region IX Migrant Education program: (1) How successful was the training provided to migrant students in science and math?, and (2) Did the attitude of participating migrant students change towards science and math? Middle schools, low achieving, migrant students (n=94) were recruited based upon: (1) inappropriate age/grade placement; (2) those students whose parents expressed a high degree of interest and commitment, to ensure student attendance in AMS; (3) students who had absentee rates of 10%… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: National professional organizations have increasingly emphasized the need for active involvement of elementary school children in thinking, decision making, and problem solving situations. Educators are calling for role playing, writing, reading, drawing, and use of manipulatives, to name but a few activities, to become part of an integrated curriculum. In an effort to determine the needs of teachers in making the change from a more traditional methodology, this paper identifies best practices as characterized by professional organizations, and describes the characteristics of math, science, and social studies programs in eight states in the South and Southeast. A 17-item survey instrument was sent to 1000 teachers in grades 1-6, with 402 teachers responding. In line with the study objective–to identify characteristics of math, science, and social studies programs… Continue Reading →
