Eric.ed.gov – Let’s Begin with the Letter People[R]. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Let’s Begin with the Letter People”[R] is an early education curriculum that uses 26 thematic units to develop children’s language and early literacy skills. A major focus is phonological awareness, including rhyming, word play, alliteration, and segmentation. Children are encouraged to learn as individuals, in small groups, and in a whole-class environment. Teacher resource books and a set of classroom books and other program materials are available as a program kit. Two studies of “Let’s Begin with the Letter People”[R] meet What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) evidence standards and no studies meet WWC evidence standards with reservations. The two studies include children in 49 classrooms in 25 preschools in Houston, Texas, and southeastern New York State. Based on these two studies, the WWC considers the extent of evidence… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – PLATO[R] Achieve Now. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “PLATO[R] Achieve Now” is a software-based curriculum for the elementary and middle school grades. Instructional content is delivered via the PlayStation Portable (PSP[R]) system, allowing students to access learning materials in various settings. Software-based assessments are used to customize individual instruction, allowing students to learn at their own pace with content appropriate for their skill level. “PLATO[R] Achieve Now” is aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics guidelines. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviewed 13 studies on “PLATO[R] Achieve Now.” One of these studies meets WWC evidence standards; the remaining 12 studies do not meet either WWC evidence standards or eligibility screens. Based on the one study, the WWC found no discernible effects for the math achievement domain. The one study is a randomized controlled… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teach for America. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: “Teach For America” (“TFA”) is a highly selective route to teacher certification that aims to place non-traditionally trained teachers in high-need public schools. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) identified seven studies of teachers trained through “TFA” that both fall within the scope of the Teacher Training, Evaluation, and Compensation topic area and meet WWC group design standards. The WWC considers the extent of evidence for teachers trained through “TFA” on the academic achievement of students in grades pre-K-12 to be medium to large for two student outcome domains–mathematics achievement and English language arts achievement–and small for two student outcome domains–science achievement and social studies achievement. “TFA” teachers were found to have positive effects on mathematics achievement, potentially positive effects on science achievement, and no discernible effects on… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Passport Reading Journeys [TM]. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Snapshot

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Literacy skills are critical to students’ academic achievement and setting them on a path to successful high school graduation and readiness for college and careers. “Passport Reading Journeys” [TM] is a supplemental literacy curriculum designed to help improve reading comprehension, vocabulary, word study, and writing skills of struggling readers in grades 6-12. Lessons incorporate both teacher led instruction and technology, including whole-class and small-group instruction, independent reading, video segments, and independent computer-based practice. The curriculum includes a series of two-week, ten-lesson instructional sequences on topics in science, math, fine art, literature, and social studies. Each sequence is themed as an expedition or journey for students. This What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) report, part of the WWC’s Adolescent Literacy topic area, explores the effects of “Passport Reading Journeys” [TM]… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Tongland works in Galloway and the women engineers

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract In 1916, a factory was established by William Beardmore and Thomas Pullinger at Tongland in south-west Scotland that was for much of the time that it was in operation staffed by women. Initially manufacturing aero engines, the women were being trained for a career in engineering, not simply as war workers. This continued post-war with manufacture of tractor engines and then Galloway motor cars. The factory was innovative for the time, being powered by a small hydroelectric scheme and built on the same principle as the Albert Kahn designed factories used by Henry Ford. By the late 1920s the building was being used for artificial silk production (Rayon) and staffed by less skilled women. The factory was used by… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – WWC Review of the Report “Longitudinal Evaluation of a Scale-up Model for Teaching Mathematics with Trajectories and Technologies.” What Works Clearinghouse Single Study Review

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The 2012 study, “Longitudinal Evaluation of a Scale-Up Model for Teaching Mathematics with Trajectories and Technologies,” examined the effects of “Technology-enhanced, Research-based, Instruction, Assessment, and professional Development (TRIAD),” a math intervention for preschoolers that combines a curriculum, a software-based teaching tool, and in-person teacher professional development. “TRIAD” is designed for young children, particularly those at risk of low math achievement. The study also included an assessment of whether continuing the intervention through kindergarten improved math achievement at the end of kindergarten. To measure these effects, two versions of the intervention were delivered: (a) “TRIAD” no follow-through (“TRIAD-NFT”), where children only received “TRIAD” in preschool; and (b) “TRIAD” follow-through (“TRIAD-FT”), where children received “TRIAD” in both preschool and kindergarten. Forty-two schools from Buffalo, NY, and Boston, MA were… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – What works in attracting and retaining teachers in challenging schools and areas?

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This paper describes a systematic review of international research evidence identifying the most promising approaches to attracting and retaining teachers in hard-to-staff areas. Only empirical studies that employed a causal or suitable comparative design and had robust measurements of recruitment and retention outcomes were considered. Studies were assessed for strength of evidence taking into account threats to trustworthiness which may bias the results. A search of 13 electronic databases and Google/Google scholar identified 20 distinct research reports that met the inclusion criteria. Financial incentives was the only approach that seemsto work in attracting teachers to challenging schools, but not effective in retaining them. To keep teachers working in challenging schools a supportive and conducive working environment would be… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Teaching Strategies for Improving Algebra Knowledge in Middle and High School Students. Educator’s Practice Guide. What Works Clearinghouse.™ NCEE 2015-4010

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mastering algebra is important for future math and postsecondary success. Educators will find practical recommendations for how to improve algebra instruction in the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) practice guide, “Teaching Strategies for Improving Algebra Knowledge in Middle and High School Students”. The methods and examples included in the guide focus on helping students analyze solved problems, recognize structure, and utilize alternative approaches to solving algebra problems. Each recommendation includes the level of supporting research evidence behind it, examples to use in class, and solutions to potential implementation roadblocks. Teachers can implement these strategies in conjunction with existing standards or curricula. In addition, these strategies can be utilized for all students learning algebra in grades 6-12 and in diverse contexts, including during both formative and summative assessment. Administrators… Continue Reading
