eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Improving college completion is a shared objective of higher education. It is the focus of colleges, foundations, state governments, and the White House. Students have gotten the message–their aspirations are on the rise. But the nation’s collective ambition far exceeds today’s outcomes. Many students are not attaining their goals. College readiness is at the heart of this disconnect between aspirations and results. If student outcomes are to equal student aspirations, colleges must be more effective in helping underprepared students move into–and successfully complete–college-level work. This 2016 National Report presents innovative strategies that are showing promise– multiple measures for assessing readiness, corequisite courses, redesigned math, accelerated developmental courses, computer-assisted developmental math, developmental education paired with workplace skills, high school partnerships, and improved preparation for placement tests. Examples of… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Primary students solve “oversized” story problems using drawings, equations, and written responses, helping them understand the links between the language of story problems and the numerical representations of matching equations. The activity also includes oral language and reflective writing, thus bringing together a variety of language experiences into mathematics work. During one 30-minute and one 60-minute session, students will: participate in a shared problem-solving activity; collaborate in small groups to develop a problem-solving strategy; use drawings, words, and equations to model solutions to story problems; effectively and clearly explain their problem-solving strategies to other students; and write about and reflect on their problem-solving strategies. The instructional plan, lists of resources, student assessment/reflection activities, and a list of National Council of Teachers of English/International Reading Association (NCTE/IRA) Standards… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Teacher quality research and the study of teacher effects received renewed attention and emphasis with Sanders and Rivers’ (1996) startling finding that teacher effects are both additive and cumulative, persisting up to an estimated two years after the student has left the teacher’s classroom. Sanders and Rivers estimated that a student receiving regular assignments (even by chance) to more effective teachers resulted in differential impact on math achievement by as much as 50 percentile points. Although these findings have undergone subsequent criticism and dispute, they serve to underscore the importance of teaching quality on student learning. This Evidence Based Education (EBE) Request seeks to provide an overview of recent research regarding teacher quality with special concentration on the teacher effects literature. Particular emphasis has been placed on… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this lesson, students identify the question-answer relationship (QAR) for word problems that relate to a graphic or table. They then use the QAR strategy to determine the mathematical and cognitive actions required to answer the word problem. This activity is particularly appropriate for fourth- and fifth-grade students. During two 40-minute sessions, students will: preview tables to stimulate prior knowledge, make predictions, interact with print, and generate questions and answers about the content; understand that the format of a table supports comprehension of the relationship between data and the self-monitoring of responses to questions; practice analyzing word problems using the QAR strategy to predict a computation strategy and determine a response; understand that the type of question may indicate the need for different cognitive and mathematical actions;… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics are currently adopted in most U.S. states. Nonetheless, most math teachers across the country are still experiencing difficulties in putting these standards into practice. Teachers and local school administrators are faced with a challenge of adapting methodologies in instruction and assessment to ensure that students master the knowledge and skills required in the new standards. This leads to an urgent need for well-designed teaching and assessment tools for math education that are aligned to the CCSS. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the Computer Adaptive Formative Assessment (CAFA) SmartWorkbook which is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) based teaching and assessment tool specially designed for coping with challenges in implementing the CCSS in mathematics. The CAFA SmartWorkbook… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study examined the benefits and challenges associated with implementing RtI in the area of mathematics in an elementary and a middle school in a rural district in the northeastern United States. We sought to document the ways in which two schools approached implementation of RtI and to explore the issues they encountered with respect to instruction, intervention, and assessment. Five themes were identified that described implementation of the RtI framework: Shifting roles and changing structures, increasing opportunities for collaboration and communication, increasing instructional and assessment support for students who struggle in math, increasing knowledge of support strategies for learners who struggle with math, and “spreading the word” and enhancing the use of the model. The results of this study suggest that the RtI model has potential… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The report, “The Ready to Teach Program: A Federal Initiative in Support of Online Courses for Teachers”, describes the history of the Ready to Teach Program and its role as one of the solutions to the national need to increase the performance of teachers through professional development. The report describes selected findings from the Eisenhower Professional Development Program and through it, the evolution of findings on effective professional development for teachers. These major efforts to improve teacher professional development by the U.S. Department of Education were supplemented by smaller efforts like the optional use of up to 10% of Title I monies for professional development, as determined by the principal of a Title I school or by the District, depending on the State Plan at that time.… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: States are increasingly interested in including measures of student achievement growth, or “value- added,” in evaluating teachers. Annual state assessments, however, which are the typical measure of student growth, usually cover only reading and math teachers and only in grades 4-8. These state assessments thus cannot generally be used to measure contributions to student achievement growth for early elementary school teachers, most high school teachers, and teachers of other subjects. As a consequence, a growing number of states and school districts are exploring alternatives for measuring teachers’ contributions to student learning. These alternatives have the potential to be used for evaluating not only teachers who work in grades and subjects outside the annual state testing regime but also as complementary growth measures for teachers of tested grades… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: When presenting results from rigorous, field-based evaluations of educational interventions, researchers often reveal methodological barriers they face in designing studies to assessing program effectiveness. The evaluations funded by the Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) present a timely opportunity for identifying relevant and pressing issues arising in current education evaluations. With over $1 billion dollars invested in the implementation and evaluation of 117 education interventions, the i3 program represents a major investment by the U.S. Department of Education in educational interventions that will both serve students, teachers and schools, and generate evidence about intervention effectiveness. The breadth and number of i3 evaluations provides a unique opportunity to learn about the features of, and challenges encountered in, the design and implementation of the evaluations. Researchers from the National Evaluation… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Classroom physical activity (PA) has been linked to a multitude of health and academic benefits. However, due to barriers such as lack of time and resources many teachers are not implementing classroom PA to the degree they would like to. One innovative solution is to integrate classroom PA into academic concepts. Based on self-determination theory, this pilot study evaluated the effectiveness of a teacher-developed purposeful movement teaching strategy on PA, on-task behavior and academic achievement. Two third grade classrooms participated in this pilot study, one acting as the comparison and the other working with the school Physical Education teacher to develop the active lessons. The evaluation consisted of accelerometers, direct observation, academic assessments and a write and draw activity to assess student perceptions. Significant improvements were found… Continue Reading →
