Eric.ed.gov – The Improving Teacher Quality Program: 2008 Grants and Current Research. Commission Report 08-17

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Every year, the Improving Teacher Quality State Grants Program issues a Request for Proposals (RFP) to award funds provided annually from the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In recent years, each RFP has focused on a specific objective tied to state priorities in teacher quality. Six grants were awarded in 2008: (1) Bell Gardens Science Project; (2) Science and Academic Library; (3) Algebraic Learning in Elementary Grades: Results, Independence, Achievement (ALEGRIA!); (4) Teacher Efficacy Affects Math and Science Success (TEAMS!); (5) Advancing Collaboration For Equity In Science (ACES); and (6) Making Algebra Accessible Project (MAAP). Since 2005, the grants have required scientifically based evaluation research in each project. The intent is to extend project evaluation beyond evaluating whether grants effectively carried out the promised… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – American Higher Education: Journalistic and Policy Perspectives from “National CrossTalk”

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In the first decade of the 21st century, the nation, the states, and colleges and universities began to grapple with the challenges of globalization, changing demography, the implications of the digital era, and of a less expansive public sector. Although not a transformative period for higher education, the decade saw significant innovations in teaching and learning, intense policy ferment, and debates over the future of colleges and universities and their roles and responsibilities in American society. Parts one and two of this book describe several of the most interesting and significant developments in higher education, and in public policy, reported by leading journalists in the field of higher education. In part three, observers of American higher education comment on critical issues facing colleges and universities, the states… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Pathways to STEM Initiative (PSI): Evaluation Report for an Investing in Innovation (I3) Development Grant

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the Pathways to STEM Initiative (PSI) on students and science teachers and to describe the level of PSI implementation. One group of middle schools participated in PSI, which included project-based science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) coursework; extra-curricular STEM opportunities for students; and teacher professional development. A multivariate matching algorithm was used to identify a comparison group of schools that received the participating district’s standard science curriculum. The students in the study schools were 62% Hispanic/Latino, 17% Black/African American, and 12% White. Additionally, 23% of the students were English language learners. The study compared students’ science achievement and teachers’ beliefs about science and attitudes toward STEM across the treatment and comparison schools and assessed the fidelity… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – 2012 Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship Special Report: An Examination of Grant and Loan Forgiveness Programs for Special Populations

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Comprising eleven financial aid programs, the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (TELS) provided financial aid to 101,569 students at a cost of $297,589,674 in 2010-11 (Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation [TSAC], 2011). The four largest programs (the HOPE scholarship program, the General Assembly Merit Scholarship program [GAMS], the ASPIRE award, and the Tennessee HOPE ACCESS Grant), which are referred to colloquially as the Hope Scholarship program, account for 70 percent of the students and 91 percent of TELS expenditures. There is a growing body of research focusing on these four programs, including an annual fact book published by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC). However, research on the smaller TELS programs remains scant. This report provides a descriptive overview of five of the smaller TELS programs, including: the Dual… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Attitude and Academic Achievement of High School Students in Mathematics under the Conditional Cash Transfer Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Students’ accomplishment in mathematics is a component of their home condition, attitudes towards the discipline, and curriculum that clarify varieties in students’ achievement. The study determined the attitudes and academic achievement of students who are recipients of Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) towards mathematics in a public national high school, Bohol, Philippines. It utilized the descriptive research to gather data on the achievement and attitude of students towards mathematics. The 112 respondents answered a standardized survey questionnaire, Attitudes toward Mathematics Inventory (ATMI) constructed, which contains self-confidence, value, enjoyment, and motivation. The gathered data were statistically treated using frequency, simple percentage, and Pearson r. The study revealed that respondents fairly performed in their achievement in math. Also, it found out that the students’ attitudes have a significant relationship with… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Estimating Impacts on Students, Teachers, and Schools of Programs Targeted for Preschool through Transition to College–Lessons for Methodologists from the Designs of 117 Evaluations Being Conducted in the Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) Grant Program.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: When presenting results from rigorous, field-based evaluations of educational interventions, researchers often reveal methodological barriers they face in designing studies to assessing program effectiveness. The evaluations funded by the Investing in Innovation Fund (i3) present a timely opportunity for identifying relevant and pressing issues arising in current education evaluations. With over $1 billion dollars invested in the implementation and evaluation of 117 education interventions, the i3 program represents a major investment by the U.S. Department of Education in educational interventions that will both serve students, teachers and schools, and generate evidence about intervention effectiveness. The breadth and number of i3 evaluations provides a unique opportunity to learn about the features of, and challenges encountered in, the design and implementation of the evaluations. Researchers from the National Evaluation… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – National Center for Education Research Publication Handbook: Publications from Funded Education Research Grants, FY 2002 to FY 2013

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Since its inception in 2002, the National Center for Education Research (NCER) in the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) has funded over 700 education research grants and over 60 education training grants. The research grants have supported exploratory research to build theory or generate hypotheses on factors that may affect educational outcomes, development and innovation research to create or refine academic interventions, evaluation studies to test the efficacy and effectiveness of interventions, and measurement work to help develop more accurate and valid assessments, and the training grants have helped prepare the next generation of education researchers. NCER’s education research grantees have focused on the needs of a wide range of students, from pre-kindergarten through postsecondary and adult education, and have tackled a variety of topic areas. Eric.ed.gov – Evaluation of the Teacher Incentive Fund: Implementation and Impacts of Pay-for-Performance after Three Years. Executive Summary. NCEE 2016-4005

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Research indicates that effective teachers are critical to raising student achievement. However, there is little evidence about the best ways to improve teacher effectiveness, or how schools that serve the students most in need can attract and retain effective teachers. Traditional salary schedules, which pay teachers based on their years of teaching experience and degree attainment, do not reward effective teaching or provide incentives for the most effective teachers to teach in high-need schools. In 2006, Congress established the Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF), which provides grants to support performance-based compensation systems for teachers and principals in high-need schools. This study focuses on performance-based compensation systems that were established under TIF grants awarded in 2010. It examines grantees’ programs and implementation experiences and the impacts of pay-for-performance bonuses… Continue Reading
