eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This final report describes activities and accomplishments of a project which developed, implemented, and evaluated the effectiveness of a microcomputer/videodisc math instructional management system for grades K-4. The system was designed to operate on an APPLE II microcomputer, videodisc player, and input-output devices. It included three subsystems: (1) a math assessment subsystem; (2) a math instruction/management subsystem; and (3) a staff development subsystem. The system was developed to support diagnostic/prescriptive teaching for mastery learning. Evaluation of the system was conducted both with English-speaking and Spanish-speaking students. The assessment system was compared to a parallel paper and pencil criterion-referenced test. Additionally, student data were used to determine difficulty level, validity, and reliability of each item in the assessment component. Evaluation indicated the assessment component was valid and reliable… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project was undertaken to implement the employability, reading, and math skills of disadvantaged students in vocational education. Included in the project were the following activities: (1) field tests, evaluation, and dissemination of a mathematics skills curriculum guide for disadvantaged learners; (2) field tests and revision of guidelines for establishing, operating, and evaluating co-op and mainstream programs for the disadvantaged; and (3) implementation of a series of small-group workshops for teachers of disadvantaged students on implementing employability, reading, and mathematics skills in vocational programs. Separate mathematics, employability, and reading skills curriculum guides and an administrator’s manual for planning, developing, and implementing mainstream, self-contained, or co-op programs for the disadvantaged were developed during the course of the project. An independent review by a third-party evaluator indicated that all… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In May 1992, 22 Massachusetts mathematics educators who either teach or coordinate/direct adult basic education (ABE) and General Educational Development (GED) programs were recruited into a group called the Math Team. During their monthly business/training sessions in central Massachusetts, members worked on various individual and team activities, including review and adaptation of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards for adult learning environments and production of newsletter for adult educators called “The Problem Solver.” Team members were interviewed during the eighth month of the yearlong project to determine their attitudes toward the Math Team’s operation and effectiveness as a staff development activity. Interviewees credited the Math Team with improving their understanding of mathematics and ability to reach students, helping them gain energy and motivation from… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project to develop special training materials to introduce college teachers to the math-language approach is reported. The materials link language learning techniques to mathematics concept formation and are intended for teachers of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students. Specialists in both fields produced a three-part training package consisting of an instructor’s guide and a video program, to be used as an introduction to and rationale for using the approach, and as a general blueprint for a text and workbook produced by the Center for Applied Linguistics and entitled “English Skills for Algebra.” The report describes activities undertaken in developing the materials and assessing their effectiveness as compared to the conventional workshop method of teacher training. Results of interviews and surveys indicate that the materials provide the necessary classroom guidance… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study aims to determine the attitudes of prospective teachers of Secondary Mathematics Education toward Instructional Technologies and Material Development (ITMD) Course. The participants of this descriptive research include 44 students, who take ITMD Course at Department of Secondary Mathematics at Necatibey Faculty of Education in Balikesir University. The questionnaire developed by researchers was conducted before and after the course at 2007-2008 fall semesters. The accuracy of the difference in the attitudes of the prospective math teachers before and after the course was tested by t test and it was seen to be statically significant in the level of p=0.05. Moreover, according to results of the interviews, the prospective teachers emphasized that ITMD Course aims to provide permanent learning and to prepare materials that are appropriate to… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: It is inevitable to receive technology support for teacher training activities in this new era in which technology is at large in our lives. Sufficiency in terms of TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge) is among the basic conditions for being qualified teachers. For this reason, activities for teacher candidates’ TPACK development should be involved in teacher training activities. TPACK expresses a combined knowledge, so complex activities should be consulted to increase this accumulation of knowledge. In this direction, the process of designing instructional materials allows learning by design and can address all of this integrated knowledge. In this study, in math education department of a state university in Turkey, a research was conducted with 19 teacher candidates studying in the third grade. Teacher candidates have been… Continue Reading →

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study aimed to develop Mathematics learning media in the form of learning videos in order to enhance the reasoning abilities of students of Mathematics Education Study Program.. This study used the development model to construct products in the form of learning videos on topics like Surface Area of Cuboid, Cube, Prism and Pyramid. To achieve this purpose, the ADDIE, Analyse, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation, development model was used, In this study; the steps conducted only reached the Development stage. Based on the validation of media experts, the percentage of the feasibility of learning media obtained was 95.15%. After being converted into a scale conversion table the percentage of the achievement level of 95.15% was in very good criteria. This proved that the learning video on… Continue Reading →
