We consider definite proposals to establish: (1) “Standards of science and math literacy” for all students. (2) “Integration of the science curriculum” with structure of matter, energy, models and modeling as unifying themes. (3) Pedagogy promoting “scientific inquiry” and argumentation. (4) Sustained “professional development” and support for teachers. (5) “Institutional support from local universities” for continuous upgrades in curriculum and teaching practices. Eric.ed.gov – The Effect of Conventional Laboratory Practical Manuals on Preservice Teachers’ Integrated Science Process Skills

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study explored the effect of conventional laboratory practical manuals on pre-service teachers’ integrated science process skills (ISPS). A validated multiple-choice questionnaire with the ISPS components was used to collect data. No significant difference between pre-service subject-specific teachers’ (biology, physics and chemistry) ISPS scores was found. The ISPS scores significantly increased along with proliferation in lab practical works, except for physics. Pre-service math teachers, who had no lab practical works, showed significantly higher ISPS scores than pre-service science teachers. The results indicated that all pre-service teachers’ ISPS scores fell into intermediate level. Further, it was found that they possessed the lowest scores for such ISPS as identifying and controlling variable, stating operational definition and designing experiments. According to UNESCO estimates, 68.8 million teachers will need to be recruited globally to meet Sustainable Development Goal 4. However, simply recruiting more teachers will not be enough to meet this challenge: we need to recruit high-quality teachers who provide high-quality lessons to improve learner outcomes — and who will remain in the teaching profession. The high number of teachers who leave teaching early in their careers means that there is a crisis in teacher retention, and high staff turnover constitutes a major drain on the resources available to develop a strong education system. Eric.ed.gov – Engineering Design of Cars and Gadgets in K-5 as Vehicle for Integrating Math, Science and Literacy

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In spite of numerous calls for action, e.g., Executive Office of the President (2010), there have been few efforts nationally to promote engineering education in the elementary grades. Of these, hardly any have targeted underrepresented populations (National Academy of Engineering, 2009, p. 74). The collaboration described in this paper is a significant exception, which could provide important lessons for those seeking to broaden the reach and scope of K-5 engineering education. We will argue for an interdisciplinary approach, which integrates engineering, math, science, literacy and art, and that engages a school and a university as equal partners. Widgets were based on Physics and Mathematics curricula under Project Oriented Learning and Blended Learning methodologies. Eric.ed.gov – Widget Based Learning in Math and Physics Undergraduate Courses as Blended Learning Approach

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This work summarizes the didactic design and introductory outcomes in an educative program, involving six math and physics university courses for engineers, based on the use and construction of widgets. Widgets were generated under Project Oriented Learning and blended learning methodologies. In the program, widgets previously generated by teachers are firstly used by students to appropriate basic and middle concepts. After, students were requested to generate their own widgets to develop complex thinking skills, applying related concepts but involving alternative situations. Design was based on curriculum integration to build mathematical, technical and visual representations of the problems and concepts involved.
