Eric.ed.gov – Assessment of Math Skills in ABE: A Challenge.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Criteria for placement tests on math skills of adult basic education (ABE) students are needed to develop tests that are not too “school-like” because the ABE students are often blocked by math anxiety due to past negative school experiences, students may encounter language problems that affect their math skills, simple math problems do not measure practical problem-solving skills, and a placement test having only right and wrong answers does not provide insight into mathematical procedures of adults. These are the criteria: (1) adult students should be enabled to show the best they can; (2) language in a placement test should not hamper the student from doing the math test; (3) adults, in particular second language learners, should have a chance to apply their own mathematical procedures and… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Making Math Leaders: The San Francisco Math Leadership Project. 1984-1988.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The San Francisco Math Leadership Project is an attempt to re-educate elementary teachers, many of whom do not consider mathematics their favorite subject and have limited mathematics backgrounds. The task is to increase the mathematics knowledge of these teachers and build their confidence in their own ability to do mathematics and to teach it. Leadership development begins with a 4-week summer institute and continues with workshops presented by participants at their school sites. In this paper, discussions include background of former participants, goals of the project, and leadership activities of former participants. Three graphs and three tables are included, as well as survey forms and responses. (DC) Link til kilde

Eric.ed.gov – Determining the Study Skills of Student Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Background: It is known that success of a student is affected by the skills of motivation, time management. Studies have showed that there is positive relationship between academic achievement and study skills of a student. Purpose: It is thought that study skills of learners should be defined to be more successful on teaching-learning process. The aim of this study is to examine the study skills of student teachers if there is a significant difference regarding to discipline and gender. Setting: Research was implemented at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) in Trabzon city of Turkey in 2007-2008 academic years. Study Sample: The sample of this study consists of 135 student teachers from the Science and Technology Education Program at Department of Primary Science Education and from Department of Secondary… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Repetita Iuvant? Lessons from Repeated RCTs on the Effectiveness of a Teacher Professional Development Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This work summarizes the results of two randomized control trails (RCTs) aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a professional development program for lower secondary school math teachers. The program, called M@t.abel, was financed by the Ministry of Education in Southern Italy with EU funds. It lasts a full school year and it is based on formal and on-line tutoring, providing alternative methods for teaching traditional math contents. The program and its evaluation were both held at scale, a situation far from artificial settings and allowing for the observation of real constraints faced in delivering such a service. This situation, along with the replication of the RCT on two consecutive cohorts of teachers, provides several opportunities and challenges both from the policy and research practice points of view.… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Forma Mentis Networks Reconstruct How Italian High Schoolers and International STEM Experts Perceive Teachers, Students, Scientists, and School

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This study investigates how students and researchers shape their knowledge and perception of educational topics. The mindset or forma mentis of 159 Italian high school students and of 59 international researchers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) are reconstructed through forma mentis networks, i.e., cognitive networks of concepts connected by free associations and enriched with sentiment labels. The layout of conceptual associations between positively/negatively/neutrally perceived concepts is informative on how people build their own mental constructs or beliefs about specific topics. Researchers displayed mixed positive/neutral mental representations of “teacher”, “student” and, “scientist”. Students’ conceptual associations of “scientist” were highly positive and largely non-stereotypical, although links about the “mad scientist” stereotype persisted. Students perceived “teacher” as a complex figure, associated with positive aspects like mentoring/knowledge transmission but… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – “I Was in Year 5 and I Failed Maths”: Identifying the Range and Causes of Maths Anxiety in First Year Pre-Service Teachers

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Mathematics anxiety affects primary pre-service teachers’ engagement with and future teaching of mathematics. The study aimed to assess the level and range of mathematics anxiety in first year pre-service teachers entering their teacher education course, and to investigate the sources of this anxiety as perceived and identified by them. Data collection methods included the RMARS survey, and Critical Incident Technique. The results indicate that the most common negative impacts on pre-service teacher mathematical self-concept involved experiences with teachers. However, their current mathematics anxiety is most commonly aroused under testing or evaluation situations. Link til kilde
