Eric.ed.gov – Decimals and Percents. Math in Action. Workbook.

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This workbook is designed as an easy-to-read, slower-paced mathematics text for students who have learning, reading, and language problems. Helping students fulfill mathematics requirements for graduation is a goal; the book can be used as the core or supplement to the mathematics curriculum in mainstreamed or special education classrooms, in mathematics laboratories, or as part of sheltered workshop and vocational training programs. Basic concepts and skills about decimals and percents, including computation with decimals and using proportions to solve percent problems, are presented. All 10 units begin with a brief discussion of how decimals or percents are used in real life and list a few key words. Lessons teach only one major concept per page. A comprehension exercise ends each lesson, usually with answers given on the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Simple Fractions.

The eight units begin with a brief discussion of how fractions are used in real life. Each lesson focuses on only one major concept, and includes comprehension exercises with an answer key. Most lessons are reinforced with at least one worksheet, available in the teacher’s guide. The units are titled: Fractions All Around You, Naming Fractions, Different Names for the Same Amount, Renaming Fractions, Comparing… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Using a Disciplinary Literacy Framework to Teach High School Physics: An Action Research Study

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This action research study investigated the impact of teaching physics using a disciplinary literacy framework for instruction across all units in one academic year. Through a suite of vocabulary strategies and lessons that encourage students to write, speak, draw, mathematically translate, and design experiments, students learn to do physics by approximating problems and tasks like physicists. The data from this study suggests that students who exhibit these physicist-like disciplinary literacy behaviors may perform better on math-based assessments so long as they employ disciplinary literacy strategies while problem solving. By teaching via a disciplinary literacy framework, the classroom may become more student-driven where disciplinary literacy behaviors are observable which may result in higher scores on teacher evaluation instruments that favor student-driven instruction. While students that exhibit disciplinary literacy… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Culminating Experience Action Research Projects, Volume 19, Spring 2017, Part 1

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: As a part of the teacher licensure program at the graduate level at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), the M.Ed. licensure candidate is required to complete an action research project during a 3-semester-hour course that coincides with the 9-semester-hour student teaching experience or with school employment. This course, Education 5900 Culminating Experience, requires the student to implement an action research plan designed through (a) the Education 5010 Methods of Educational Research course, (b) a required learning assessment required during student teaching, or (c) a newly-designed project. The course is, also, taken by elementary and secondary teachers who are, already, licensed to teach. The action research projects, from spring semester 2017, are presented. This Action Research Project includes: (1) Student Transition into Ninth Grade (Jennifer Clemmer);… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Transformation of Teacher Attitude and Approach to Math Instruction through Collaborative Action Research

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: As a university professor who has taught at the teacher education, masters, and doctoral levels, the life of teaching has been an enduring interest, particularly teaching that occurs in K-12 settings. From the author’s own work as a K-12 teacher and administrator to her earliest studies of effective teaching and in her own university teaching, she has been interested in the complex practice of teaching and in how to make the practice more effective for student learning and more satisfying and fulfilling for the teacher. Thus, she engaged in a yearlong action research project with a fifth-grade teacher who happened to be her daughter. Her objective was to better understand the action research process; she had not anticipated the multi-faceted results in terms of student benefits and… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Individuals in action: bringing about innovation in higher education

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article addresses academics who innovate in higher education and their characteristics. We undertake a qualitative case study of six individuals who implemented disruptive and transformative pedagogical approaches and curricular practices in their departments and/or at their institutions. Our findings point to six common characteristics – motivation to change institutionalized practices, interest in change, experience in the field, multi-embeddedness, authority to act, and the strategic use of social networks – which seem to play a role at individual levels in driving these disruptive and transformative approaches. While acknowledging studies in higher education that address innovation as a response to exogenous influences, this study highlights the role of individuals with certain characteristics in driving innovation and processes of endogenous… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Explicating professional modes of action for teaching preschool mathematics** A previous version of this paper was presented at The Eighth Nordic Conference on Mathematics Education in Stockholm, May 30 – June 3, 2017.View all notes

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Play-based preschool pedagogy usually relies on informal teaching while policy trends and some research call for increased formalisation of the pedagogy. Using Bernstein’s concepts of classification and framing, this article characterises mechanisms that link evaluation of preschool to the push towards the formalisation of teaching in preschool. Moreover, it is suggested how preschool teaching of mathematics can be conceptualised in a way that widens the pedagogical responsibilities of the teachers to include a broader range of social activities than typically expected. These responsibilities concern how teachers are involved in pedagogical situations, if situations are planned and if the mathematics is a pedagogical goal in the situation or instrumental in some other activity. It is argued that a practice… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Action Research Project by Teacher Candidates and Their Instructor into Using Math Inquiry: Learning about Relations between Theory and Practice

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper reports on what two teacher candidates and their instructor learned from an action research project into the use of inquiry to teach mathematics. We use a model of the relation between theory and practice in teacher education to interpret what we learned about inquiry. This model describes three modes for teacher candidates to learn about teaching: (1) applying theory to practice; (2) interpreting theory and practice, and (3) building/refining personal, practical and professional theories. We learned to (1) apply the 4D-Cycle Model of inquiry, (2) interpret what it means for inquiry to be flexible, and (3) build a theory of teaching with inquiry based on non-linear and community-based dispositions of teachers toward learning. We conclude by suggesting that this model could constitute a developmental pathway… Continue Reading

Abstract In the 1980s, reports from Congress and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) presented statistical evidence showing that employees in the Foreign Service were overwhelmingly White male, especially in the higher positions. To remedy this historical discrimination, the State Department instituted an affirmative action plan during 1990–1992 that allowed females and race-ethnic minorities to apply directly for mid-level positions. A White male employee claimed that he had been disadvantaged by the plan. The appellate court unanimously held that the… Continue Reading
