Eric.ed.gov – Math and Science Teacher Candidates’ Use of Technology to Facilitate Teaching and Learning during Student Teaching

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The goal of this study is to determine how effectively student teachers from a large comprehensive institution have used technology to complement their teaching in mathematics and science. The researchers reviewed the required Teacher Work Sample (TWS) capstone projects of student teachers. The TWS is an assessment instrument designed to guide student teachers in designing, implementing, reviewing, and adjusting instruction. Student teachers document in the TWS narratives their use of technology, and this use was compared to the “2008 U.S. Department of Education (USDE): Measures of Teacher and Student Technology Use.” Data gathered in the study revealed both strengths and weaknesses regarding the student teachers’ use of technology to enhance their teaching goals. Implications are derived about effective use of technology by mathematics and science teacher candidate… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Connecting Math Website Evaluation to an Authentic Learning Activity for Teaching Candidates

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This article will discuss two teacher training functions: One function is to give the teacher candidates practice in evaluating currently available mathematics websites used in grades K-8 for mathematics instruction. The second function is the evaluation of data by teaching candidates of 13 commonly used math sites by middle and elementary teachers. Research and data collection are combined with the authentic activity of evaluating mathematics websites using critical review and evaluation tools. The usage of technology to assist in the education process was been increasing with the advent of more complicated technologies and relevant software (e.g., mathematics based websites). Creating new ideas on how to potentially aid learning is important, but so is the evaluation of such sites and programs in order to determine that they (e.g.,… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – From ‘Training Wheels for Teaching’ to ‘Cooking in Your Mother-in-Law’s Kitchen’: Highlights and Challenges of Co-Teaching among Math, Science, and Special Education Teacher Candidates and Mentors in an Urban Teacher Residency Program

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Urban teacher residencies (UTRs) have emerged as an innovative alternative to recruiting and preparing high quality teachers for traditionally underserved, urban schools. UTRs offer opportunities for teacher candidates and mentors to use co-teaching models to differentiate instruction, particularly as schools adopt more inclusive practices emphasizing collaboration and co-teaching among educators. Co-teaching in residencies is an area that remains largely unexplored. This study describes experiences of 37 residents and 35 mentors in three cohorts of a yearlong urban residency program as they engaged in co-teaching together in secondary math, science, and special education classrooms. Data included surveys on co-teaching and collaboration from residents and mentors, along with reflections on highlights and challenges of their co-teaching in the residency. Findings indicate that both residents and mentors had positive perceptions… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – An Action Research Project by Teacher Candidates and Their Instructor into Using Math Inquiry: Learning about Relations between Theory and Practice

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper reports on what two teacher candidates and their instructor learned from an action research project into the use of inquiry to teach mathematics. We use a model of the relation between theory and practice in teacher education to interpret what we learned about inquiry. This model describes three modes for teacher candidates to learn about teaching: (1) applying theory to practice; (2) interpreting theory and practice, and (3) building/refining personal, practical and professional theories. We learned to (1) apply the 4D-Cycle Model of inquiry, (2) interpret what it means for inquiry to be flexible, and (3) build a theory of teaching with inquiry based on non-linear and community-based dispositions of teachers toward learning. We conclude by suggesting that this model could constitute a developmental pathway… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Latino Youth’s Out-of-School Math and Science Experiences: Impact on Teacher Candidates

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This qualitative study examines the learning and interaction processes between Latino/a teacher candidates (TCs) and youth during a community service-learning program involving science and math. Knowing and affirming nondominant youth’s strengths are essential from funds of knowledge and Third Space perspectives. Participants were 11 TCs and their tutees, 30 youth in first through tenth grades. The study took place in a Texas border colonia, or unincorporated settlement lacking basic services. Data sources were participant observations, youth’s interviews and TCs’ pre- and final reflections, rapport-building analyses, a focus group, and lesson plans. We found TCs incorporated the youth’s funds to develop and implement authentic math and science lessons with them. Implications relate to how community service-learning projects can help TCs’ future math and science teaching and can create… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – The Effect of Mathematics Teacher Candidates’ Locus of Control on Math Anxiety: Structural Equation Modeling

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: In this study, the effect of mathematics teacher candidates’ locus of control on math anxiety was tested, along with the effects of gender, achievement and class level moderators. The study was carried out according to a causal design in which locus of control was taken as an independent variable, while math anxiety was taken as the dependent variable, and gender, achievement and class levels were considered as moderator variables. The participants were 402 students from three different state universities in Turkey who were selected using a combination of convenience and purposive sampling. Data were collected from the participants using the Locus of Control Scale (LCS) and the Math Anxiety Rating Scale-Short Version (MARS-SV). A path analysis was then used to provide a combination of measurement error in… Continue Reading
