tandfonline.com – The Sensitivity of Value-Added Estimates to Specification Adjustments: Evidence From School- and Teacher-Level Models in Missouri

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract We provide a side-by-side comparison of school and teacher growth measures estimated from different value-added models (VAMs). We compare VAMs that differ in terms of which student and school-level (or teacher-level) control variables are included and how these controls are included. Our richest specification includes 3 years of prior test scores for students and the standard demographic controls; our sparsest specification conditions only on a single prior test score. For both schools and teachers, the correlations between VAM estimates across the different models are high by conventional standards (typically at or above 0.90). However, despite the high correlations overall, we show that the choice of which controls to include in VAMs, and how to include them, meaningfully influences school and… Continue Reading

Abstract The present note explores sources of misplaced criticisms of P-values, such as conflicting definitions of “significance levels” and “P-values” in authoritative sources, and the consequent misinterpretation of P-values as error probabilities. It then discusses several properties of P-values that have been presented as fatal flaws: That P-values exhibit extreme variation across samples (and thus are “unreliable”), confound effect size with sample size, are sensitive to sample size, and depend on investigator sampling intentions. These properties are often criticized… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Will the ASA’s Efforts to Improve Statistical Practice be Successful? Some Evidence to the Contrary

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Recent efforts by the American Statistical Association to improve statistical practice, especially in countering the misuse and abuse of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) and p-values, are to be welcomed. But will they be successful? The present study offers compelling evidence that this will be an extraordinarily difficult task. Dramatic citation-count data on 25 articles and books severely critical of NHST’s negative impact on good science, underlining that this issue was/is well known, did nothing to stem its usage over the period 1960–2007. On the contrary, employment of NHST increased during this time. To be successful in this endeavor, as well as restoring the relevance of the statistics profession to the scientific community in the 21st century, the… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Fostering Early Math Comprehension: Experimental Evidence from Paraguay

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Research indicates that preschool children need to learn pre-math skills to build a foundation for primary- and secondary-level mathematics. This paper presents the results from the early stages of a pilot mathematics program implemented in Cordillera, Paraguay. In a context of significant gaps in teacher preparation and pedagogy, the program uses interactive audio segments that cover the entire preschool math curriculum. Since Paraguayan classrooms tend to be bilingual, the audio and written materials use a combination of Spanish and Guaraní. Based on an experimental evaluation since the program’s implementation, we document positive and significant improvements of 0.16 standard deviations in standardized test scores. The program helped narrow learning gaps between low- and high-performing students, and between students with trained teachers and those whose teachers lack formal training… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The Role of p-Values in Judging the Strength of Evidence and Realistic Replication Expectations

Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract p-Values are viewed by many as the root cause of the so-called replication crisis, which is characterized by the prevalence of positive scientific findings that are contradicted in subsequent studies. The spectrum of proposed solutions includes redefining statistical significance, abandoning the concept of statistical significance, or eliminating the use of p-values altogether. The unintended consequence of these proposals has been confusion within the scientific community, especially in the absence of consensus or clear alternatives. The goal of this… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Self-efficacy and approaches to learning mathematics among engineering students: empirical evidence for potential causal relations

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Theories of self-efficacy and approaches to learning are well-established in the psychology of learning. However, studies on relationships between the primary constructs on which these theories are developed are rarely reported in mathematics education research. Thus, the purpose of the current study is to provide empirical evidence for a potential causal relationship between perceived self-efficacy and approaches to learning. The present study adopts a cross-sectional survey research design that includes 195 engineering students enrolled on a first-year introductory calculus… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The Flipped Classroom in Introductory Statistics: Early Evidence From a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. Abstract The flipped classroom (FC) inverts the traditional classroom by having students participate in passive aspects of learning at home and active aspects of learning in class with the guide of an instructor. The introductory statistics course for nonmath majors may be especially suited to the FC model given its unique challenges as a required course for students with varying mathematical skills and background. For example, these students often have low interest and high statistics-related anxiety. Recent studies suggest… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Attitudes of Medical Students toward Statistics in Medical Research: Evidence from Saudi Arabia

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Today, most medical research depends on statistics, and interpreting these are crucial as the world tries to improve health outcomes. Medical students are at the front line in this effort but many have negative attitudes toward statistics. To assess this and offer recommendations, this study evaluates the attitudes of medical students in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, toward statistics in medical research. The factors of sex, age, and program year are analyzed. In total, 327 medical students completed the Attitudes Toward Statistics in Medical Research survey. The results show that students somewhat appreciate the value of statistics in their professional careers but have negative to neutral feelings toward statistics, their own intellectual knowledge and skills in statistics, and the difficulty… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Dynamics of overqualification: evidence from the early career of graduates

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT Formulae display:?Mathematical formulae have been encoded as MathML and are displayed in this HTML version using MathJax in order to improve their display. Uncheck the box to turn MathJax off. This feature requires Javascript. Click on a formula to zoom. ABSTRACT This study analyses the persistence and true state dependence of overqualification, i.e. a mismatch between workers’ qualifications and their jobs’ educational requirements. Employing individual-level panel data for Germany, we find that overqualification is highly persistent among university graduates over the first ten years of their career cycle. Accounting for unobserved heterogeneity, results from dynamic random-effects probit models suggest that a moderate share of the persistence can be attributed to true state dependence. Unobserved factors are found to be… Continue Reading

sciencedirect.com – Does teenage interest in a teaching career lead to becoming a teacher? Evidence from Australia

sciencedirect.com har udgivet: Highlights • Most teenage Australians who plan a teaching career abandon their plans before they turn 23. • Plans to pursue a teaching career stabilize in early twenties. • The gender gap in teaching career plans is similar at ages 16, 23 and 26. Abstract Prior research on teenage interest in teaching careers hinges on the assumption that many adolescents, who expect to become teachers, realise their plans in adulthood. However, little is currently known about whether this is the case for recent youth cohorts. This issue is explored here using the nationally representative data from the Australian PISA 2006 cohort who participated, between 2006 and 2016, in the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Youth. The findings indicate that two-thirds of teenage students who wanted to become teachers… Continue Reading
