eric.ed.gov har udgivet: The report describes a workshop for adult basic education teachers in Ohio which utilized the teacher training television series, “Basic Education: Teaching the Adult.” Responses from teachers identified the two clusters of content presented: (1) measurement/diagnosis of student learning and individualized instruction, and (2) teaching reading and math and selection and use of materials. A structure for individualizing the experience for participants is described. Resource persons developed the following procedures for the workshop: viewing and discussion of a few relevant television lessons (selected for each cluster), formulation of individual written learning objectives by participants, discussion of the objectives with a resource person, and use of the objectives in planning special sessions. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This project entailed a three-year efficacy evaluation of the Computer and Team Assisted Mathematical Acceleration (CATAMA) Lab developed by the Center for Social Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University. The CATAMA Lab was proposed as an immediate and practical approach to addressing the different types of math deficits held by students at urban high-poverty schools. The Lab required only 1 teacher per school reducing staff and professional development requirements. It used multiple instructional techniques (including individualized computer instruction, direct instruction, pair and team learning, and individual instruction) to teach math concepts and skills. The intervention, known to participants as the Talent Transfer Initiative (TTI), was implemented in 10 school districts in seven states. The highest-performing teachers in each district–those who ranked in roughly the top 20 percent within their subject and grade span in terms of raising student achievement year after year (an approach known as value added)–were identified. eric.ed.gov har udgivet: A project adapted an existing problem-solving curriculum to help unemployed or underemployed displaced homemakers and single parents qualify for job placement and training. Forty-five adult learners from the New Choice program participated. Handouts adapted from a prior Math Employment project and instructor-created materials were used. Handouts from level 1 of the previous project were simplified even further. Instruction was supplemented with self-help groups. Findings indicated the following: 43 of 45 participants increased their math scores; 15 raised their scores 1-2 grade levels; and 28 raised their scores 3-5 grade levels using the Test of Adult Basic Education. Test scores from completion of teacher-generated word problems were substantially increased. Of the 45 participants, 28 entered training and 2 entered full-time employment. The other was to discern ways to improve this knowledge and to document the changes observed. In teachers’ colleges in Mexico, math contents and pedagogical ideas are taught separately, so we aimed to help student teachers to integrate these.
