ABSTRACT Background and Context: Computing education is expanding, while the teaching of algorithms is less well studied. Objective: The aim of this study was to examine teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) for teaching algorithms. Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with seven computer science (CS) teachers in upper secondary education (students aged 15–18). The data were analyzed qualitatively. Findings: We found two patterns of variation in teachers’ PCK. First, we detected variation in the teachers’ goals related to their view… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – ‘We put on the music and then the children dance’ – Swedish preschool teachers’ dance educational experiences

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This article investigates and discusses Swedish preschool teachers’ work with and understanding of teaching dance. Preschool teachers should teach aesthetic expressions such as dance, according to the curriculum. This study depicts how preschool teachers, in semi-structured group interviews in 18 preschools, describe their work with teaching dance. The results show that early childhood teachers are well prepared for and focused on all children, and let them influence the dance education. They are flexible, oriented towards each child’s needs, regard children as competent co-creators, and they cooperate with colleges to inspire each other. However, the respondents rarely mention their own bodily involvement when dance is taught in their preschool. They have difficulties in picturing dance specific knowledge, separated from… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Risk and safety management in physical education: teachers’ knowledge

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Background In school-based physical education (PE) programs, teachers’ task to identify, assess, manage and communicate risk and safety and balance these with other pedagogical concerns is complex. Teachers’ knowledge is essential in generating quality PE and their specialized knowledge of risk and safety management (RSM) is crucial for creating safe learning environments and educative opportunities for students. However, studies of teachers’ RSM knowledge seem scarce and particularly studies including teachers’ perspectives. Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore how teachers develop their RSM knowledge for PE programs. Methods To gain data on teachers’ perspectives on RSM semistructured in-depth interviews were used to generate data. The study involves 17 primary and lower secondary PE teachers from Norway.… Continue Reading

The guide presents general information and is divided into the following sections: (1) “Cayuse Indians”; (2) “Whitmans and the Pioneers”; (3) “Science Activities”; (4) “Art Activities”; (5) “Math Activities”; (6) “Map Activities”; (7) “Writing/Spelling”; (8) “Physical Education Activities”; (9) “Social Studies”; and (10) “Appendix.” The appendix includes recipes, books, and films that are available… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Pre-service Teachers’ Perception of Competence, Social Relatedness, and Autonomy in a Flipped Classroom: Effects on Learning to Notice Student Preconceptions

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Science teachers should be able to notice student preconceptions in order to adapt instructions to their students’ needs and support the learning process. Noticing as a core practice of teaching should thus be implemented early in science teacher education. A crucial prerequisite for noticing is knowledge about students’ preconceptions, which is an important element of science teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge. To enhance pre-service teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge, flipped classroom approaches seem especially promising as they combine a theoretical introduction to important didactic concepts with a direct application of these concepts in profession-oriented learning tasks. Furthermore, flipped classrooms seem to satisfy the three basic personal needs of experience in competence, social relatedness, and autonomy according to the self-determination theory… Continue Reading

Eric.ed.gov – Role Perceptions and Role Dynamics between Graduate Scientists and K-12 Teachers in a School-University Outreach Project: Understudied Constructs

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: Partnerships between scientists and teachers are an important focus of the current reform in science education. This study examined the roles and the dynamics of interactions in an NSF-funded Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (GK-12) project. Data sources included interviews with teachers, fellows, and students at eight K-12 schools. Data were analyzed for emergent categories recognized by teachers and fellows alike. Roles played by the fellows were those of science/ math expert, scientist/mathematician role model, source of material resources, source of curricular enrichment, and teaching partner. Teacher roles were perceived as liaison between fellow and schools, teaching partner, teaching mentor, and science/math learner. Although the project underdefined the roles of the teachers, teachers showed noteworthy consistency in perception of their roles. The roles of the fellows… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Education of Children with Disabilities in Rural Indian Government Schools: A Long Road to Inclusion

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT Global commitments to the education of children with disabilities, have led to progressive policy developments in India, and a surge in the enrolment of children who were traditionally excluded from the formal education system. This paper examines the perceptions and practices of mainstream teachers in rural government schools, within the context of increased learner diversity, focusing on how teachers understand, and respond to, the needs of children with disabilities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with teachers and classroom observations, in six primary schools, in three districts of Haryana. Our findings suggest that deficit-oriented views dominated teacher thinking, but they showed a readiness to engage with disability issues, recognising the value of education for all. However, they struggled… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Preservice teachers’ experiences of pandemic related school closures: anti-structure, liminality and communitas

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Initial Teacher Education (ITE) can be viewed as a formative space in professional teacher identity development. Practice plays a key role in shaping teacher identity, providing a window into the reality of school life, as well as nurturing professional autonomy. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, school life shifted suddenly and unrecognisably in March 2020. This paper focuses on the experiences of preservice teachers on an ITE programme (post-primary) in one Irish University during the period of sudden school closures. The data show the transition to be problematic, underscored by a chaotic pivot to virtual communication and a destabilising of the structures that normally provide consistency. Yet it also presented opportunities and responsibilities. We explore Victor Turner’s work to consider… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – The role of structure and interaction in teachers’ decision making during allocation meetings

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT This study focuses on teachers’ group decision making during Dutch allocation meetings. A previous interview study showed that teachers question the objectivity of decisions due to negative interaction experiences and a lack of structure during these meetings. To characterize the structure and interaction of these meetings, 33 student allocations were observed. Results showed a variety of structures and interactions, including differences in the degree to which the meetings met criteria relevant to achieving objective allocation decisions. It can be concluded that – based on the criteria of acceptance, fairness, and transparency as used in this study – allocation meetings need to be well-prepared and substantiated, to allow for every teacher’s opinion to be heard, and follow a procedure… Continue Reading
