Eric.ed.gov – Applying Laser Cutting Techniques through Horology for Teaching Effective STEM in Design and Technology

eric.ed.gov har udgivet: This paper explores the pedagogy underpinning the use of laser manufacturing methods for the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at key stage 3 design and technology. Clock making (horology) has been a popular project in design and technology (D&T) found in many schools, typically it focuses on aesthetical design elements. This paper describes a new project, which has been developed to enhance the STEM content of a horology project through advanced utilisation of laser cutting machinery. It allows pupils to produce their own products from self-made mechanical timing mechanisms. The central aim is to strengthen the application of the underlying technology of mechanisms and the manufacturing capability of laser cutting technology in D&T. Trials with schools have shown success in gaining pupils’ interest in… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Teachers, performative techniques and professional values: how performativity becomes humanistic through interplay mechanisms

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT In recent years, research has pointed to the development of ‘post-performative’ teachers and cultures within the education system. This article provides explanations for how it is possible that teachers marked by performative rationality also hold and enact seemingly humanistic professional values. The study points to three interplay mechanisms that reconstitute teachers’ understandings of the role that the techniques and values play, including a reconstruction of professional values in performative terms. Thus, the article provides an explanation for the alignment of performativity and humanism in ambiguous school contexts. Link til kilde

tandfonline.com – Introducing Data Science Techniques by Connecting Database Concepts and dplyr

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: Abstract Abstract Early exposure to data science skills, such as relational databases, is essential for students in statistics as well as many other disciplines in an increasingly data driven society. The goal of the presented pedagogy is to introduce undergraduate students to fundamental database concepts and to illuminate the connection between these database concepts and the functionality provided by the dplyr package for R. Specifically, students are introduced to relational database concepts using visualizations that are specifically designed for students with no data science or computing background. These educational tools, which are freely available on the Web, engage students in the learning process through a dynamic presentation that gently introduces relational databases and how to ask questions of data stored… Continue Reading

tandfonline.com – Review on Reliable Pattern Recognition with Machine Learning Techniques

tandfonline.com har udgivet en rapport under søgningen “Teacher Education Mathematics”: ABSTRACT ABSTRACT The primary goal of pattern recognition is supervised or unsupervised classification. Among the various frameworks in which pattern recognition has been traditionally formulated, the statistical approach has been most intensively studied and used in practice. More recently, neural network techniques and methods imported from statistical learning theory have deserved increasing attention. The design of a recognition system requires careful attention to the following issues: definition of pattern classes, sensing environment, pattern representation, feature extraction and selection, cluster analysis, classifier design and learning, selection of training and test samples and performance evaluation. The general problem of recognising complex pattern with arbitrary patterns with arbitrary orientation, location and scale remains unsolved. New and emerging application, such as data mining, web… Continue Reading
